good morning.
>> good morning.
it gives me such great pleasure to have you folks down here yet again this year.
I would like to just preface the proclamation by saying excellence in education is probably one of the chief best drivers of a healthy community and a healthy economy.
and I really applaud the Lake Travis i.s.d.
and the parents and community leaders out there that continue to push for this kind of excellence.
every year it seems like wow, they can't identity again, but they do it again and they do it better.
so I just want to thank you and I also want to make a comment that I really appreciate all of you coming.
I think a lot of people in Travis County don't realize that coming to Commissioners court at 9:00 on Tuesday morning means you have to drive upwards of an hour from Lakeway.
so I appreciate the effort you folks made to be here.
and I'd like to recognize who is here today.
I guess I'll start on the right.
we first have dr. Brad lancaster, who is the incoming new superintendent at Lake Travis i.s.d., and he brings with him a very celebrated career midway and prior to that as well of excellence in schools, and we look forward to his leadership out.
there we also have kim brandt, who is the Lake Travis principal -- Lake Travis high school principal, and gary biley, director of extracurricular activities and marco alvarado who is our public information person from Lake Travis i.s.d.
let me read our proclamation and I'll give you all a chance to make comments.
whereas small town Texas is known across our country as strong, friendly communities with a devotion unmatched anywhere else for their local high school team.
and whereas all the areas served by Lake Travis i.s.d.
including the cities anvil ladies and gentlemenes of bee cave, Briarcliff, spice wood are examples of what we told dear as texans.
and whereas Lake Travis i.s.d.
and high school have been rated exemplary by the Texas education agency in 2010 and 2011 and have numerous honor honorees in their scholarship program and the lady cavs went undefeated on their way to the second state championship and becoming the first team in state history to win 50 match necessary a season.
and whereas in eight of the nine seniors on this team plan to play college volleyball next year including six who signed with nc division 2 a programs. Whereas the cavalier football team finished their drive for five and won an historic and unprecedented fifth straight Texas championship.
and by doing so have become the stuff of Texas folklore.
and also this year the girls golf team was runnerup and the Marching band the state finalist.
and whereas the phrase Friday night lights doesn't come close to describing the excellence and strong competition of the academic and athletic teams found at Lake Travis high school every day.
and whereas these students' dedication, commitment and hard work in achieving these lofty goals are stellar examples of all young people.
and whereas the support of all parents, staff and leadership and indeed all the community of Lake Travis i.s.d.
have made this success possible.
now therefore be it proclaimed that the Travis County Commissioners court does hereby recognize January 7, 2012, as Lake Travis high school day in Travis County to owner their achievements both on and off the field.
>> second.
>> move approval.
the.
>> good morning.
>> good morning.
>> comments?
the.
>> we're just proud to be here and really we have the ability every day to see our future unfold in front of us and that's an exciting place to be.
so thank you.
>> thank you.
>> we thank you.
and also I would like to point out that there is going to be a parade honoring these achievements this Saturday evening at 5:00 at the galleria shopping center in bee cave, and I understand that it's going to be followed by a fireworks -- a safe fireworks display afterwards.
so I encourage anyone who can to go and enjoy the festivities.
>> that's wonderful.
>> but when I hear Lake Travis, it kind of reminds me of my old athletic days and I wonder why didn't I become an athlete instead of a county judge.
>> [laughter] because I was small, slow, but I had fun, a little bit.
but I'm where I belong.
but you are outstanding.
it really is incredible.
for those of us who came close to lettering in a sport or two, and it amazes me how many of those kids go on to play sports in college and achieve great academic success and become prominent, productive citizens.
thank you.
>> in the interest of full disclosure, I'm an hour and a half into day 2 on the job.
so I can take no credit for the success.
it's a great honor for the proclamation and I thank you for having us.
>> I can't think of anywhere else in the state that this amount of recognition has been given for outstanding performance not only on the athletic field but also in the academic area.
that is a great tribute because these particular students that graduate from your particular institution
>> [indiscernible] within the Lake Travis i.s.d.
area will be able to leaders to many of our great institutions.
you are really fueling the fuele future of this country by fueling the level of performance you have expected your particular students to share in.
and it makes me feel good because I hear -- I look at baylor, for example, baylor university, and, of course, they are on the map now.
waco is on the map.
and, of course, your particular i.s.d.
-- I say i.s.d., Lake Travis i.s.d.
is on the map in the world and the nation know about you.
so just keep performing at the level you are doing and you can't go wrong and invest in those students because those students are the future of this nation and also the future of this country and the world.
so we want to make sure that that is really highlighted because it means a lot.
education is the top key for a lot of things in this community.
so keep, keep, keep, keeping on.
thank you.
>> thank you.
>> I would just like to say too I think there is a lesson learned here that we can share with the entire area, and that is that I think Lake Travis i.s.d.
has built an excellent team.
they can change football coach necessary the middle of the five stream win and still continue wing.
they can change superintendents in the middle and still continue having national merit scholars and academic excellence.
it's a community effort and it's a team and I applaud that and I hope that that bleeds across the county or across the state.
>> with with that, Commissioner, I'm going to give them a big applause.
>> [applause] they deserve a big applause.
>> we with appreciate you and all that you do.
by the way, a good politician would never admit two and a half hours when two and a half years is available.
finishes.
>> [laughter]
>> thank you all for your service.
thank you for what you do.
>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
okay.
down front.
