Travis County Commissioners Court
December 13, 2011 (Agenda)
Citizens Communication
Citizens communication is first.
and this item gives residents an opportunity to address the court on any matter not on the agenda for up to three minutes.
first is giavani mastrano, followed by ronnie reeferseed.
>> good morning, judge, Commissioners.
Travis County retiree.
I'm here to
>> [indiscernible] merry christmas, happy new year.
I want to
>> [indiscernible] allowing retirees to participate in a combined charity event this year.
it was even a pleasure for me as a retiree to help you all in the event and make us feel like we are not forgotten.
we are retired but we are still part of the Travis County family.
secondly, I wanted to -- I left a present before you a copy of the sacramento, california, county web page.
>> [indiscernible] by the they had time they've done that and I would like if media can tell me, can show me the website, please.
their staff has done a beautiful job on the website and this time they've provided
>> [indiscernible] option which allowed its citizens to be able to read the website in their own native languages, like, for instance in spanish, they had a little buzzer you can see here, they need to work on that.
they translate for you any language that you would like.
and as Commissioner Gomez knows and sarah Eckhardt, the hispanic population has grown tremendously in Travis County and also it's a multicultural city so I don't see why we should not provide the citizens with this option to head to our website in their own language.
I think it's a nice feature to have.
and the last thing I wanted to talk to you about is I wish you all well in your new Commissioners court at 700 lavaca.
and I hope you will
>> [indiscernible] wi-fi network over there so I would like to volunteer to work with someone on -- we're working with cisco on setting up a wi-fi on all of our
>> [indiscernible] so they are doing a good job.
we're going to deploy wi-fi all over our state hospitals.
that's all I had to say.
thank you very much and thank you for having me.
appreciate it.
>> did you say corpus christi's website has the ability to translate into spanish?
>> that's right.
they actually provide translation on the top of the web page and they have it in spanish, mandrin and that's all.
>> thank you.
>> thanks so much.
>> ronnie reeferseed.
>> thank you, sir.
howdy.
I'm ronnie reeferseed.

say hello to soon to be made clay dafoe, our mayor is a laughing stock having thrown me out of city hall and for a year because of his nonsensical tantrum --
>> [buzzer sounding] -- mayor leffingwell and all those others who didn't make a peep of protest, city manager, city council, members, they are all finished.
>> thank you.
>> thank you.

>> good morning, judge, Commissioners, gus pena, proud native east Austinite, proud united states marine corps veteran.
Commissioner Davis, I want to thank you for listening to my pleas yesterday.
thank you very much for that.
you got a good heart, young man.
merry christmas and happy new year.
please show your appreciation and thanks for our military troops upon return.
they need readjustment counseling, jobs, mental health counseling.
unlong-term rate is higher than reported.
it is reported less than 9%.
we know for a fact that a lot of people have given up.
the people that give up are not included this the unemployment rate.
we know that for a fact already.
it's higher than 10%.
just look at people looking for jobs.
it's not correct, 8%.
we need jobs with a livable page of $10 per hour and more with benefits.
volunteer to mentor and tutor our youth.
sponsor the people for christmas.
you that have give it to somebody else.
thank you vfw post, don brown and mike jordan helping the community and us needy veterans.
judge and Commissioners, tomorrow there will be a special called meeting regarding the Austin energy proposal to raise the electrical rates.
it was called by the mayor.
a lot of people don't know about this.
it is called for Friday and they are not letting backup out to the public until the city council is made privy to it.
they are already made privy to it so I don't know what the heck the deal is with that.
folks, we can't afford any more rate hikes and electricity.
a lot of us poor can't afford food or living.
cheryl cole made a comment last week at city council, we don't want this to become a city of two cities, the poor and the have nots.
it already is.
not criticizing the have as but the haves have given to the have nots.
I have good friends in west Austin to help me, but we don't have affordable housing anymore.
students can't afford to have affordable housing.
there is no affordable housing for them also so don't forget about the students.
u.t., acc students, whatever.
last I want to thank commander pedrosi who has been helping with us the kids, the city, county, wherever, to ensure these kids stay out of gangs, stay out -- I'm not scared of them.
we have federal agents following ongoing issues and tracking gangs and the cartel.
so a.p.d.
does have their hands full but we're helping them out.
I don't care.
I'm not scared of them.
I've got god protecting me.
we want kids out of the gangs being to be police department.
employed.
there's no jobs for kids in Travis County.
anyway, I want to go ahead and wrap up by saying a society's worth is measured by its treatment of less fortunate people.
please listen to ongoing conversation about the electrical rates.
can't afford it and god bless you all, have a good day.
>> thank you, mr. Pena.
speaking of haves and have nots, the Travis County combinedco charities campaign formally ended last Friday.
as county judge, I am informally opening it back up until this Friday.
a lot of departments still collecting contributions and putting reports together.
I expect an email, email message and probably a voice mail message from yours truly soliciting and begging on behalf of the needy in our community and we do a good job annually so let's not let this year be an exception.
