Travis County Commissioners Court

December 13, 2011 (Agenda)
Item 25

View captioned video.

Now let's call back to order the voting session of the Travis County Commissioners court.
and the one item we did not get to is 25, consider and take appropriate action on request for Travis County to notify the city of Austin that it has no objection to giving honorary recognition to roy q.minton by designation of a single street sign with his name on 11th street in honor of his long and storied career.
mr. Odon.

>> good afternoon, judge and Commissioners.
I know you've got a lot to do.
this is sort of a sentimental request for some of us, but it has a business purpose too.
you own the three corners at this intersection, the only other owner is mr. Minton's law firm.
I would rely on the material provided to you about who he is and why he might deserve such modest recognition.
I'm not sure in your packet I had noticed getting ready for this today that he was named as an indicator by Texas lawyer not long ago as one of the most influential attorneys in the lone star state for the last 100 years.
not the last five or ten years.
more importantly, to many of us he was, still is, a mentor, a teacher, a great historian and a spirited participant in legal affairs of our community, all public affairs really, for several generations.
so I would request you to express -- it's not a legal, as far as I know, any kind of initiative on your part.
the signage is owned and the decision is made by the city, but I would assume they would care what you might think about it, and since you are a property owner for three of the four corners at the intersection, I think it only changes one sign, it only applies -- it's a honorary gesture, it doesn't really change the name of the street, but similar for the designation for a block or two for willie nelson.
it's that the kind of honorary gesture, it doesn't change anything for emergency services, personnel, that sort of thing.
some day soon, according to mayor leffingwell, he will make the proposal at the city to make this change as the honorary addition to the signage and know of no opposition to it.
I've made an effort to connect with other folks in the area other than the county and I haven't had any opposition to the request.
so I would request that you pass a resolution or something like that.

>> we saw the 80th birthday sign on the side of his build a good job a modest 10 or 20-foot sign that the family --

>> I wanted to clarify that the recognition was not intended to hint that he's 100 years old.

>> no, and I wouldn't want -- by the way, I pointed out I think in your letter, he did not know of and probably would not support this request, and although I do feel some urgency about getting it done, it is his 80th birthday, I have no thought he won't be around a long time but you can tell by the color of my whiskers, if we don't get it done son, I may not be around.

>> move approval.

>> but a letter to the city indicating that the Commissioners court voted no objection to their doing it would be sufficient?

>> yes, sir, and I attached a draft resolution so if you, I guess, would pass the resolution she that's a way of conveying it to them.
just an expression of support.

>> letter of resolution.

>> I would think the resolution would be a little more appropriate, if that's acceptable.

>> and it has lots of good facts in it.
not lack of objection, but a an enthusiastic endorsement.

>> it was just a draft.
I probably never knew.

>> any more discussion?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
thank you very much.
good deed, by the way.
26 we need to take into executive session also.

>>

>> [inaudible].
