Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, November 8, 2011 (Agenda)
Citizens Communication
First on the agenda is citizens communication.
and this item gives residents an opportunity to address the court on any matter not on the agenda for up to three minutes.
gus pena is number 2 followed by crystal bastilos, and ronnie reeferseed third.
mr. Pena.
>> you said I was number 2.
is there a number 1?
>> you are number 1.
>> for veterans, we lift up all the veterans who have answered the call of duty.
because of your kindness we live in freedom due to the sacrifice veterans have made.
we thank you for letting us live in this land where love and we thank you for the victories that have been given to us and the liberty we enjoy because of the courageous veterans.
bless us and bless our land that we may always be the land of the home and the brave in his name amen.
please remember to thank all veterans for their service to the united states of america.
we gave it our all.
happy birthday to the united states marine corps on the 236th birthday.
we were born November 10, 1775.
remember and thank all current military personnel that have served in iraq and afghanistan.
they need treatment, housing, reentry counseling.
show your appreciation not just on veterans day, memorial day, but every day for veterans and the sacrifices they made and our moms carried us in their wombs.
I served in the first, third, fourth marine division and murder and second marine aircraft wing and I'm a proud graduate of albert sidney johnson high school, proud native east Austinite.
check out the records.
remember and thank and appreciate our female veterans whom we tend to forget.
they have distinct health care needs.
it's sad we have to distinguish male from female.
that's the only way you are going to get our female veterans to get the treatment and deserve.
they serve with distinction and valor.
I want to thank also a lot of the veterans that have helped out homeless veterans.
we have a big homeless veteran population, but not only that I want to remind this court and the city council and the legislature, all representatives, lieutenant governor, speaker, we have a big number of veterans with -- homeless veterans with families, with families.
there aren't too many units out there that are affordable for rent.
the h.u.d.
program is a joke and we have congressional inquiries and investigations from washington looking at the veterans affairs supportive housing for veterans.
it is a big joke.
it's not good.
there used to be a saying in the late 60s and early 70s don't forget, hire the vet.
one other thing I want to mention and let the record reflect, please don't forget about our vietnam veterans.
they served with distinction, they came back, were spat upon, called baby killers, et cetera.
we need to show them our appreciation and thanks because they deserve it.
no war is popular, no war is good but we are there for them and we need to show support for vietnam veterans.
my father was in the army in world war i.
my older brother was in world war ii.
my younger brother gilbert was navy and my mother united states marine corps.
>> [buzzer sounding] my baby brother edward united states marine corps and myself united states marine corps.
when I go to heaven to saint peter reporting I served my time and god bless america, god bless the united states marine corps.
have fun at the veterans day parade.
thank you.
>> thank you, mr. Pena.
>> [applause] miss bastilos.
>> good morning, Commissioners.
>> good morning.
hrmd is hosting a balloon sale.
we are allowing an employee to send a bouquet of balloons who have made a difference.
our balloon sales are one dollar for an individual balloon or you can send a bouquet of balloons which is six balloons for five dollars.
we're going to have several opportunities for pre-sales.
we're allowing pre-sales up until the 16th, which is the day before our actual event.
there's several ways that people can pre-order.
they can come to hrmd at 700 lavaca and order their balloons up until the 16th.
we've also sent out sign-up sheets to h.r.
reasons and employees can do their pre-orders that way.
or on Commissioners court days which is today, November 8th, and in the 15th, we'll be in the granger lobby and employees can come and purchase balloons.
each balloon offered will have a card attached to it and that's a way for employees to write a little thank you note to their co-workers who have made a difference.
we are going to be delivering to the downtown campus Travis County sheriff's office off airport and also the tax offices and other county offices in the airport location.
if anyone wants to order on the day of the 17th, they will have to come down to hrmd, which is at 700 lavaca, fourth floor, room 446 to place and pick up their order and they will have to deliver on the day of the event.
however, anyone who pre-orders will -- their balloon orders will be delivered on the day of the 17th.
thank you.
>> thank you.
>> so where will all of that money go?
>> this is -- that's the most important part.
we are doing this for combined charities.
50% will go to combined charities and the other half will be kept -- will be part of h.r.
activity fund that we host events with.
>> and do we owe you a buck for the balloons that you delivered to us today?
>> no, you don't.
>> the employees actually sent them to us.
>> it's free advertisement.
thank you.
>> thank you very much.
we look forward to participating.
mr. Reeferseed.
>> yippee.
thank you.
okay.
yippee, yes, I'm ronnie reeferseed.
>> [indiscernible] I'd like to echo mr. Pena about veterans day.
let's -- let's bring them home now and stop the death.
we can all do that.
and I'm exhausted with the time wasting scandal hog wash about mr. Cain exaggerated overtension to cain's personal matters fade in importance from a full examination of cain's ideas.
the 9-9-9 scam, another swift ego tripping scheme to bamboozle folk with something the lame scheme media claim is simple.
sure, with a new flat tax and consumption tax on top of our incredibly complicated income tax system, it's simply a bait and switch ploy that takes a little temporarily off here, charges a whole big chunk over there and we all pay more taxes.
we don't need another tax scheme.
mr. Cain, your lockstep surrender to our own -- of our own national sovereignty to israel is not good.
don't worry, mr. Cain, you have to fight for room on that stage, those who openly declare that unilateral surrender to israeli extremism is in our best interest, I mean in my opinion, a that the unilateral surrender to israel must end now.
there is one candidate leading the world as a long-time friend of israel for peace.
less aggression, less death.
the world will no longer be held hostage by so so-called peace scheme process which never leads anywhere and never will.
peace and freedom is available.
our precious founding fathers knew that funding wars was solely up to the congress with absolutely no war-making plans, authority or dictates surrendered to any other world organization of any kind of any name.
that's a biggie.
our precious national sovereignty war future by our founding peace prize, war is no game.
it's not to be played by anybody.
it's not for sale.
dr. Ron paul, 2010,, is a good place to start.
lew rock well.com is another, free press.net is another taste on line of my favorite weekly newspaper.
to sub scriep call 1-888-69-news.
1-888-69397.
yet another scheme.
vote today to kill those criminals bonds.
>> [buzzer sounding] another scream to waste money on urban rail.
that's a bondage we don't need to pay.
thank you.
>> thank you, mr. Reeferseed.
dr. John kim.
>> thank you.
good morning.
>> good morning.
>> good morning.
>> my name is john k.
kim.
