Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, October 4, 2011 (Agenda)
Item 3
3.
approve resolution to the Texas department of agriculture in support of a grant for meals on wheels and more.
and mr. Pruett is here.
should I read the resolution?
>> I'm sorry?
that would be great.
>> it reads whereas the organization desires to apply for grant funds to the Texas department of agriculture to supplement and extend existing services to homebound persons in the county who are elderly and/or have a disability pursuant to home delivered meal grant program.
whereas the program rules require the county in which an organization is providing home delivered meals services to make a grant to the organization in order for the organization to be eligible to receive program grant funds, that's state funds basically.
and whereas the program rules require the county to approve the organizations accounting system or fiscal agent in order for the organization to be eligible to receive program grant funds.
now therefore be it resolved that we the members of the Travis County Commissioners court do hereby certify that Travis County has made a grant to the organization in the amount of $115,026 to be used between the first day of January, 2011, and the 31st day of December, 2000 -- probably should say 2012.
>> yes, sir.
>> that the organization provides home delivered meals to homebound persons in the county who are elderly and/or have a disability and that Travis County has approved the organization's accounting system or fiscal agent.
be it further resolved that the Travis County Commissioners court urges the Texas department of agriculture to provide the requested grant funding to meals on wheels and more.
I move approval.
>> second.
>> mr. Prewitt.
>> thank you, why, Commissioners, about five years ago we went to the Texas legislature and asked them to allocate some money for meals on wheels programs across the state of Texas.
we had wonderful support in the legislature, a unanimous vote in the house and senate.
how unusual is that to support meals on wheels program.
one of the key factors was to get support from the county.
that's the only way that we can leverage that state money.
we led that charge here in Austin.
strange bed fellows, kirk watson and warren chisolm worked to pass that legislation, they worked together and they worked well.
we knew going in that there would be no county that supported this type of thing better and more adequately than Travis County.
y'all have a history, an absolute history of working with human service organizations in this community and I can't tell you how many executive directors I've talked to who appreciate the work of this court.
you are so close to the public we serve and your doors are always open to us.
so we're very grateful for that.
and I will tell you over the past three years, we've been able to bring in about 3 million additional dollars into the community through this tda grant process.
it goes specifically for food.
it's not technology grants, it's not any of that, strictly for food and food service to homebound folks and disabled folks in this community.
it cannot happen.
I mean, sometimes when you say it can't happen without you.
maybe it can happen without you.
but I'm telling you this can't happen without the county's participation in what we do, we are not eligible for this funding.
and every year y'all have come through with this.
we're exceedingly grateful.
thank you.
>> thank you.
>> we're grateful for what you do, it's amazing.
>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
I have changed 2011 to 2012.
but we can redo this.
>> I think that's probably good enough.
if it's not, we'll find out and let you know.
>> okay.
>> I was praised for my writing ability in elementary school you, it's been a few years since that date but I did my best.
good to see you.
