Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, October 4, 2011 (Agenda)
Item 2
>> item no.
2.
consider and take appropriate action on an order regarding outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Travis County.
good morning, herschel lee, Travis County fire marshal.
there's been a burn ban for 10 months, there should not be any outdoor burning.
I would like to remind the public of a few cautions.
while hot work is still allowed in some circumstances, people need to be extremely cognizant of the fact that hot work can start fires and has started a few fires.
I'm -- also be very careful with outdoor cooking still allowed on private property, disposal of any fuel that has fire is dangerous, those ashes should be extinguished.
also smoking.
we are seeing an increase in the number of roadside fires and that is generally an indicator that people are still throwing or discarding lit cigarettes from the vehicles.
that is extremely dangerous under current conditions.
we are having cooler weather, but along with that cooler weather comes the lower humidity which means that fires can start even more easily.
current drought index is 784 to 785, the burn ban in place now, in place by the court will expire October the 19th.
my recommendation is to leave that burn ban in place.
>> court members, questions or comments?
by taking no action, we basically leave in place the current burn ban.
thank you very much.
