Tuesday, September 20, 2011 (Agenda)
Item 32

View captioned video.

32, consider and take appropriate action on constitutional amendments to be considered by voters during the general election on November 8, 2011.
one of these we kind of need to bring up, Commissioner Eckhardt.

>> the only one that I think causes some policy concerns is with regard to the continuing 100% tax exemption for the widowed spouse of a handicapped vet.
even if that spouse remarries.

>> that's number 1?

>> that's number 1.
from a policy standpoint, the original provision made all the sense in the world that a totally disabled vet gets 100% tax exemption for their homestead.
the -- this new iteration that will be on the ballot for constitutional consideration extends the exemption to the surviving spouse even if the surviving -- irrespective of the surviving spouse's physical circumstances and irrespective of whether the surviving spouse remarries.
no?
it's not true?

>> that was in the -- judge, deece eckstein.
I stated that.
that was in an early version of the bill, but the final bill that passed would continue the exemption as long as the surviving spouse remained in that homestead and as long as they did not remarry.
however, if they remarried, they would lose the exemption.

>> I would throw off my problem with it.

>> I'll second the motion.
or do I make my own motion.

>> I'm not making a motion.

>> I move approval.
discussion?
all in favor?
show Commissioners -- show the whole court voting in favor.
thank you for clarifying that for us, mr. Eckstein.

>> if I am to be so rude, what did we just vote in favor of?

>> voted in favor of those constitutional amendments.
putting them on the ballot.
I don't think we ever get out there and campaign for those anyway, do we?
but for those who ask you in the counties where you travel in where the court stands, tell them my court voted unanimously.

>> I can tell you the court has contemplated all of them and spoken favorably.
