>> good morning, laurie pierce with criminal justice planning.
we're here today, the american probation and parole association has declared the week of July 7th as probation, parole and community supervision week.
I have with me today dr. Nagy with adult probation and vera.
anyone here from adult parole?

>> do we have others here?
from probation, parole.

>> yes, we do.

>> would they like to stand and come forth?
if you can stand behind your four managers, that would be fine us.

>> I think it's going to be most of the courtroom.

>> [laughter]

>> welcome.
I want to say it reminds me of my old probation days, but I was never a probation officer.
should we read that proclamation?

>> in you don't mind.

>> whereas, communities corrections is an integral element of our justice system.
whereas community correctional professionals are sworn to abide and uphold the law while recognizing the inherent right of the public to be safe guarded from criminal activity.
whereas community corrections supervise adult and juvenile offenders in the community holding themselves up as role models for their clients.
whereas community corrections professionals are trained in direct service provision and refer clients to needed support and assistance within the community.
whereas community corrections professionals collaborate with city, county and state agencies as well as nonprofit and faith based community agencies and groups.
whereas community corrections professionals champion prevention, intervention and accountability.
whereas community corrections professionals offer support and protection for victims. Whereas community corrections professionals advocate community and restorative justice as well as public outreach and education.
and whereas community corrections professionals are a true force for positive change in their communities.
now therefore be it resolved that the Travis County Commissioners court does hereby proclaim July 17th through 23rd, 2011, as probation, parole and community supervision week and encourage all Travis County residents to honor these community corrections professionals and to recognize their achievements and contributions to our community.
that's saying a lot.

>> second.

>> they do a lot.

>> they do.
may i?

>> sure.

>> in our audience we have 16 probation officers or counselors that are the recipient of our building bridges not walls award, and they have been elected by their unit to be the officer of the year and to represent them here in court.
and each and every one of these individuals is exceptional at what they do, and on ongoing basis contribute to the department as we try to move forward with evidence based practices.
and if it's okay with you, could I read their names?

>> sure.

>> not in any particular order.
forgive me if I don't perfectly pronounce the names.

>> [reading names] so thank you all very much for what you do.

>> [applause]

>> and judge and Commissioners, we want to thank you for the support you continue to give juvenile probation as well as our juvenile board led by the honorable darleen burns.
one of the things we want to recognize is continuous hours of commitment, dedication, stick to itness for the families in our community, protecting the public safety as well as continue to give kids development so they can be productive citizens and viable members of our Travis County community.
so thank you all very much.
and thank these guys behind us.

>> thank you all very much.

>> thank you.

>> [applause]

>> we appreciate all of you and all that you do.

>> I have one question for y'all.
do we know what percentage of the Travis County population is on community supervision?

>> I don't know the percentage.
it's about 12,000 individuals on adult supervision.

>> and do we know how many on juvenile?

>> we have approximately 1,000 juveniles on juvenile probation.

>> so roughly 13,000?

>> uh-huh.
together, yeah.

>> 13,000 in a population of about a million.

>> uh-huh.

>> very good.

>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
you are deserving of more than this proclamation, but this all we have to give you today.

>> thank you very much and thank you to criminal justice planning.
