Item 3
3, approve prom mission recognizing the 22nd annual Juneteenth emancipation day celebration to be held Friday, June 17, 2011.
and again we'll call up 2 after we take up number 6.
good morning.
>> good morning.
good morning.
>> good morning.
we're going to make ours short and we appreciate the opportunity to be here today recognizing the Travis County city employees Juneteenth celebration.
cheryl brown, with judge Sam Biscoe's office.
we can introduce real quickly and encourage people to come out and I will speak more on Friday.
>> on the Juneteenth planning committee with Commissioner Davis, precinct 1.
>> Commissioner Ron Davis' office.
>> customer Ron Davis' office.
>> Travis County health and human services.
>> i.t.s.
>> deon, would you just tell --
>> sure.
the program will be on June 17th, that's on Friday, from 11 a.m.
until 2:00 p.m.
and some of the things we're expecting are as far as food items, we're having for those of you who will be interested in eating lunch, we're having turkey legs, sausage wraps, roasted corn, poor boys and nachos.
for those of you who would like to see booths, t-shirts, jewelry and the Austin historical society, and also there will be people, performances, presentations.
and I believe you will see cheryl and I up there cut up and hosting.
so I think it will be a great time for everybody to come out and really, really celebrate the meaning of Juneteenth and also just have a good time with other Travis County employees and the general public.
>> the county clerk's office.
>> one thing I do want to emphasize is that this Juneteenth celebration is put on by the elected officials and our friends and is not used -- no Travis County money is used whatsoever.
it is for the employees to have a little time to get together and see each other and just enjoy our roots heritage.
I do ask for donations from elected officials and department heads and the money is coming in a little slow this year, but I know that judge Biscoe and Commissioner Davis, they say they have our back so record less what's going to come up there write that check.
but if you want to save them a little money, those who are listening to me now, it's still not too late to get your checks, donations.
we do appreciate it.
and judge, if you want to read the proclamation, judge, we're finished.
>> we read this annually for the last ten years or so.
do we need to?
>> no, we don't have to.
>> basically what we do is declare -- proclaim June 19, 2011 as Juneteenth day and encourage all to support the noble purpose of emancipation day and Travis County employees of all races are invited, appointed and elected officials of all races are invited and historically have participated.
it's been a grand occasion in the part, woolridge park across from the courthouse.
we ask employees to use their lunch hour.
some take an additional 5 or 10 minutes, but not the ones in my office,, of course, and have a good education.
it's cultural educational at this time activity and we're proud of it and Commissioner Davis and I have co-sponsored it for 15 or 16 years.
>> it's been a while.
>> move approval.
>> second.
>> thank you.
>> thank you.
>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
>> [applause]
>> thank you all.
