Item 1 is a public hearing to receive comments on a request to temporarily close thaxton road for reconstruction beginning June 15, 2011, and continuing until construction is completed.

this request for the reconstruction of a portion of thaxton road came from our road and bridge division.
the condition of the road is in pretty bad shape and we are currently working on a capital improvement project to the north of this segment of thaxton, which was a 2001 bond project.
we're nearing completion of that.
we still have the contract or mobilized at the site so it seemed like a good opportunity to get the best bang for the buck by seeing if we couldn't get them to include the reconstruction of this section of thaxton in their contract work with us.
if this public hearing results in the approval of the closure, then we will bring to the court a change order request through purchasing to include the work-in of the contract.
we posted notification on site.
it is a fairly lengthy detour, 5.5 miles, and we've had some calls from folks concerned about that.
but in allowing us to close the site, it allows the work to be done quicker and the goal is try to get it done before school starts.
if we can make that happen, it would go a long way.

>> the detour, I guess the road is pretty rural in nature and there aren't a lot of roadway networks and so the shortest distance we could make was a 5.5-mile detour.
