Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, March 22, 2011,
Item 1
Number 1, consider and take appropriate action on an order concerning outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Travis County.
>> good morning, judge, Commissioner, Travis County fire marshal.
take the drought index is at 508 and continuing to rise.
the short-term weather forecast for our area is for little to no rain.
as a matter of fact, the west Texas weather for today, d.p.s.
issued a weather alert yesterday for areas of the panhandle and west Texas for extreme fire condition weather, which is much like the event that happened approximately three weeks ago whether several -- tens of thousands of acres were burned, and that involves winds of 30 to 40 miles an hour and very low relative humidity.
currently there are 174 Texas counties that have burn bans.
the -- yesterday the Texas for rest service presented some information to us about the predicted fire weather and what the la nina effect, the warmer and drier than normal that is expected to go away in April is now forecast to hold out until June.
so it appears warmer than normal and drier than normal is going to stay with us for a while.
in speaking with the emergency management coordinator, the local fire chief's recommendation is to leave the burn ban in place.
>> so the last burn ban that we approved expires when?
>> April 6th.
>> okay.
questions, comments?
thank you very much.
by taking no action, we leave that burn ban in place.
