Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, March 15, 2011,
Item 3
Number 3 is to consider and take appropriate action on an agreement between Travis County, city of Austin and Austin independent school district to purchase software to support the connecting the dots initiative to improve services to students in the Austin independent school district.
this would have been consent eligible because we previously approved it, but there has been a development in the budget of the aisd that may cause us to change the original plan, and were you able to get confirmation of that or know what the redirection is?
>> sherri fleming, county executive for health and human services.
yes, I did speak with staff over at aisd and they have assured me of their continuing commitment to this project.
certainly they are under a great deal of -- I don't even know what the word is.
they are certainly experiencing a little bit of unrest at this point, but have confirmed their commitment.
I think the difference in the agreement based on where we originally started has to do with section 7.52 regarding the commitment of the parties.
and basically it says that we will all provide in kind support to ensure that this software purchase affords us the opportunity for the outcomes that we seek.
and that is to be able to better track those students who are moving about the district and that -- where that mobility is impacting their success in either moving from grade to grade or moving to graduation.
and so it will also help us to identify and track the services that we might use to target those families in order to improve the outcomes for those students.
so I believe the commitment is still there.
I think that all of the members of the joint subcommittee where this project originated passed a motion to support this effort and so I believe that we should move forward and give our support as well.
>> I guess the question is we agreed to depend on the aisd to provide personnel to gather the data and report on the findings?
>> yes.
there will be -- aisd --
>> is still committed to do that?
>> is still committed to do that.
>> okay.
move approval.
>> second.
>> I do think that before we make that purchase, we ought to do everything possible to firm up that continuing commitment.
>> yes, sir.
>> because if they don't do it, somebody else has to do it, but the software doesn't run itself.
>> that is absolutely correct.
and staff -- myself, butter lamb breast cancer ras from the city of Austin and mel waxler from aisd meet on a regular basis to discuss the progress of this project.
>> discussion on the motion?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
thank you very much.
