Travis County Commissioners Court

Tuesday, March 1, 2011,
Item 18

View captioned video.

18 is consider and take appropriate action on the new Travis County building at 4717 heflin lane, Austin, including waiver of policy requiring certain procedural steps because only one name has been recommended.
in the past, we've always had more than one name recommended.
this time we only have one.
so the question is whether we should waive that policy because of that or whether we want to strictly adhere to our procedure as some elected officials would insist.
Commissioner Davis.

>> yes, judge, I would like to move that we approve item 18 with the particular waiver since there's only been one name submitted, and we name the precinct 1 office building after judge richard e.
scott.

>> second.

>> seconded by Commissioner Eckhardt.
any discussion on the motion?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
congratulations, judge scott.

>> congratulations.

>> [applause]

>> judge scott, why don't you come up here so folks can see who you are.
even though you've been here 35 years, a lot of folks may not have had a chance to come to your court.
just come to the table.
and judge scott, if you would, come with him.
we would appreciate that.
if you have any words, you can --

>> good morning.

>> good morning.

>> just a few comments.
to judge Biscoe and the commission and specifically my Commissioner, Commissioner Davis, I would like to thank you for giving me this high honor.
and for those who came and spoke in support of your voting for my name to be placed on the building, I want to thank them as well.
I'm cognizant of your agenda, but would like to take a couple of minutes to recognize a few people and thank them for their support.
my wife who is sitting next to me, reverend joyce scott and my son philip scott for their support over the years.
my pastor and co-pastor and members of the metropolitan church who are here, who came in to support.
and members of the Travis County judiciary who signed the letter and thank judge williams for her support, who is now sitting in precinct 1.
and most specifically I would like to thank my dear friend and colleague judge herb evans.
judge evans started this all by submitting an application recommending my name for the new precinct 1 building.
again, I would like to thank him.
I will cherish his friendship.
over half of my life was judge at precinct 1, over half of my life.
I'm blessed to be sitting here today with family and friends on this special occasion.
I will do my best to continue to be worthy of such an honor.
thank you all for your support.

>> thank you.

>> thank you.
now you have a chance to work on your golf game, judge.

>> I see judge Biscoe still can't get over my high school football team beating his.

>> [laughter] he went to a school named after my family, emmitt scott, so he is under me.
a year behind me.

>> [laughter]

>> thank you.

>> thank you very much.

>> thank you.

>> [applause] best of luck to you.

>> judge scott, let me shake your hand.
thank you.
