Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, February 8, 2011,
Item 18
18 is to consider take appropriate action regarding invitation by certain chinese officials to visit Travis County.
I had meant to prepare a draft.
in my view there ought to be a short paragraph that describes a little bit about Travis County.
not that our chinese friends would not know about Travis County already, but when I look at some of the facts, some of them are sort of impressive.
solemn --so, let me take a run at trying to come up with a paragraph to add to the draft letter that we got from the requesting residents and share that with the court.
and what I will try to do is keep that.
I have in mind five or six sentences.
but sentences that should be of significance to somebody not intimately familiar with Travis County.
all right.
now, we did approve the invitation.
john, is this something routine?
>> are you asking if court is giving you discretion to finish the letter?
>> we expect the court to sign the letter.
we said last Tuesday the invitation would be fine and we had a draft and said we would revise that.
I’m suggesting we add to it a few facts about Travis County.
the question is really whether that would be required to be brought back to the court.
court members would have to sign it.
so they would hopefully read it.
>> right.
if the court is now granting you discretion to finish the letter and they will sign it, whatever you finish, that is certainly allowable.
if you are saying by circulating the letter, you are all going to make changes and review it, that would not be allowable.
>> how about this way.
if any court member thinks the letter should be changed, then we put it on the agenda.
>> right.
>> so moved.
>> second.
>> discussion?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
thanks for keeping us legal, mr. Hilly.
>> thank you.
>> I don't always like your decisions but I know you go them in good faith and in our best interest.
