Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, January 4, 2011,
Item 1
Number one is to consider and take appropriate action on lifting an order prohibiting outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Travis County.
>> morning, judge and comilingsers.
last week we got a little bit of rain and it did good for about two days.
we were thankful for it.
yesterday I received a report from fire dispatch about the number of outdoor fires that have occurred in the last two weeks.
there have been a total of 243 fires outdoors in the last two weeks.
these included brush, grass and trash fires.
one item of note is that 134 of those occurred on new year's eve.
and new year's day.
and we attribute a lot of that to the fact that fireworks were available for the public to use.
but in speaking with the fire chiefs by e-mail yesterday, each one that responded recommended that we leave the burn ban in place as over this past weekend they are still seeing small grassfires sprout up.
the current drought index is 500, which is only slightly lower than it was when we initiated the burn ban approximately three weeks ago.
the current ban if no action is taken today will expire January the 12th.
the forecast for this week, there's a 60% probability of rain Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and Sunday.
so it may be possible to either lift the ban or let it expire next week, depending upon whether or not that 60% chance shows itself.
so it is the recommendation at this time to leave the burn ban in place.
>> but to have it back on the agenda next week.
>> yes, sir.
>> questions, comments?
thank you.
by taking no action we leave the burn ban in place.
