Travis County Commissioners Court

Citizens Communication
Citizen communication is first.
this gives the public the opportunity to address the court on any matter not on the agenda.
speaker number one is gio mastriko, a speaker number 2 gus pena.
good morning.
>> good morning, Commissioner, elected officials and everyone at Travis County.
most people call me gio.
and I'm here to wish everyone at Travis County a happy and prosperous new year.
and also to congratulate all of our Travis County elected officials who won the re-election this past November.
congratulations to everyone who won.
and also to the rest of Travis County officials who won elections.
as a Travis County taxpayer, as a Travis County resident and retiree, I feel honor to have an excellent group of elected officials to represent us in Travis County.
keep up the good work.
thank you.
and Commissioner Eckhardt and everyone that supported you on the solar panel electrical farm project, and this project will create a lot of more jobs to our community so I would like to thank you so much.
and one project that I would love to see developed some day at Pflugerville and surrounding cities is to have all of our cities 100% wireless, public networks.
>> [inaudible] a few years ago, wireless for everybody.
and thank you for your time and happy new year.
>> thank you so much.
>> happy new year to you.
>> happy new year.
>> mr. Pena.
>> good morning, judge, Commissioners.
gus pena, proud native east Austin resident, long-time, life-long proud united states marine corps.
I'll never forget to say that.
state budget is said to be in a shortfall of 25 to $26 billion.
I have spoken to many legislators who have informed me on the qt that the budget -- the amount of money to balance the money is more closer to 36 billion.
that's not good.
we're going to take a hurt, we're going to take a hit and it's going to be bad for the residents, the most poorest of the poor.
you all have a fiduciary, a statutory responsibility to the taxpayers of Travis County to vote in and for the best interest of the taxpayers.
responsible, wise and prudent decision-making process.
as we approach the new year 2011, remember, our poverty rate is higher.
homelessness is higher.
is what is higher than what it is claimed to be.
it's more than 9%.
a lot of people have given up.
I've told you this is last two years.
please show appreciation and support for all our military personnel in iraq and afghanistan and elsewhere as they return back to the united states of america, our home country, they need jobs, ptst treatment, mental health from time to time, treatment for alcohol and substance abuse and housing.
I nearly forgot to say this, students are struggling with core subjects, math, reading.
we need mentors and tutors.
if you can volunteer to become a mentor and tutor, please, I beg of you, one thing if you ever heard more important than our lord jesus christ's birthday we need our mentors to succeed and graduate.
the end of course exam is going to be tougher.
that is not what we're looking for.
a society's worth is measured by the treatment of its less fortunate.
happy new year.
>> [speaking in spanish] help the poor, the people that are homeless.
there is a good article in the american-statesman balancing priorities and budget.
read it, listen to it.
we're in a world of hurt.
that's what we used to say in the military.
we need help.
thank you all for the help that you have done the past year.
y'all have made some very good decisions.
some of them I don't agree with.
a lot of taxpayers are going to be hurt by it, but try to make the best decisions to lessen the negative impact on our taxpayers.
god bless you all, god bless our taxpayers and happy new year.
>> happy new year to you too.
anyone else for citizens communication?
those are the two who signed in.
dr. Kim was a bit tardy but we are a democratic Commissioners court so we will go back to Commissioners court to give him an opportunity to have his three minutes.
>> thank you.
you didn't pass mr. Reeferseed on the way here, did you, doctor kim?
>> [laughter]
