Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, November 30, 2010,
Item 19
19 is consider and take appropriate action on request for assistance from foundation communities for the operation of its tax preparation assistance program during the 2011 tax season to provide free income tax filing assistance to eligible residents.
a, agreement for the provision of space at Travis County's south rural community center in del valle and east rural community center in manor for the operation of tax preparation assistance program during the 2011 tax season.
b, in-kind support to foundation communities' tax preparation assistance program in the form of printing brochures, fliers, forms, and other promotional material for the 2011 tax season.
and c, in-kind support to foundation communities' tax preparation assistance program in the form of deaf interpreters services for the 2011 tax season.
do we have space in the del valle center and east rural community center?
>> yes, sir.
we have provided that space, made the space available for this purpose the last two years, I believe, at least.
and this has been a tremendous service to the del valle community.
you will notice in your backup it looks as though we've prepared over800 returns at that location last year alone, and it is a tremendous assistance to residents, our residents who earn less than $50,000 a year can qualify for earned income tax credit and receive that important advice.
>> that's why I move approval of a.
>> second.
>> and individuals making less than 25,000, right?
>> any comments to talk me out of my position?
>> absolutely not.
>> all in favor?
it passes on a vote of seven to zero.
-- that passes by unanimous vote.
>> b?
not to cut you off.
>> > but I sensed support to that, so he I thought you would want us to approve it.
>> I always deal it your input, judge.
>> b has to do with request for support for printing for the foundation communities for their various documents that they provide during the tax season for residents to complete their returns and whatnot.
outreach, promotional materials and the request is to again print those in the county's print shop as a support for this project.
last year we spent about a little over 8,000.
we believe the requests will cost a little over 10,000 this year.
>> questions?
>> move approval.
>> second.
>> discussion?
all in favor.
that passes by unanimous vote.
we put the print shop on notice?
>> yes, absolutely.
>> and c?
>> c has to do with making available deaf interpreters so that persons who might be hearing impaired can also have access to these services and foundation communities is good about contacting us and letting us know when they need those services and we scheduled them as needed.
>> ma'am, identify yourself and give any comments you want like for us to hear.
>> I’m linda paulson.
I work in the tax centers and I just wanted to be here in case you had any questions about services.
>> any questions for mr. Paulson.
>> let me ask you this: as far as outreach is concerned, how is that handled procedurally?
>> [one moment, please, for change in captioners] I can assure you that all of the -- many of the providers that probably come to mind as I’m speaking to you all are aware of this program and do a great job of promoting it to their clients and have access and any information they need to participate.
>> all plugged in.
>> we put that on channel 17 also.
>> yes, we do.
>> move approval.
>> second.
>> and that's c.
discussion?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
good program, keep up the work and we're glad to be a partner.
>> thank you.
