Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, November 9, 2010,
Item 4
4 is approval resolution recognizing November 1, 2010, as veterans day in Travis County.
should I read this?
>> yes, sir.
>> whereas the department of veterans affairs certifies that Austin, Texas and Travis County is designated by the veterans day national committee as a regional site for veterans day 2010.
whereas the parade committee has proclaimed years of aviation as the theme for this year's celebration.
whereas the women air force service pilots, wasp, better known as the fly girls of world war ii, claimed their place among aviation pioneers such as amelia earhart risked their lives flying filmsy wooden aircraft in open cockpits.
those women opened doors for the present day female combat pilots of the iraq and afghanistan wars.
where as the tuskegee airmen accepted a challenge at the time when many people thought black men locked intelligence, courage and patriotism to fly.
their positive experiences and outstanding record of accomplishments paved the way for african-american men and women aviators of today.
they are recognized by the department of defense as true combat fighter pilots of today's wars serving their country.
whereas the wright brothers invented and flew the first piloted airplane at kitty hawk, north carolina, to the pilots of world war ii and korean war and vietnam wars, the astronauts of outer space travels, and the fighter and support pilots of the gulf war this veterans day celebration is to honor these men and women on their 100th year of military aviation.
whereas tract government currently employs 779 military veterans and it is appropriate that their patriotic and unselfish service be suitably recognized and commemorated.
these colleagues are our sons, daughters, husbands, wives, friends and neighbors who have willingly answered the call to service.
these employees have brought honor and distinction to Travis County through their service.
whereas vets helping vets is the motto of the Travis County veterans service office and is steadfastly considered to serve one veteran at a time.
now therefore about it resolved by the Travis County Commissioners court that all citizens of Travis County are urged to observe November 11, 2010, as veterans day with appropriate programs and activities focusing on the achievements of those who have served this great nation.
especially our women veterans and showing appreciation for their dedication and service.
and I move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning.
>> good morning, judge and Commissioners.
ollio pope with the Travis County veterans office.
the theme of the veterans day is very important to the parade committee.
we have honored the women veterans, the past, present and future, the 36th division of the Texas national guard.
families and veterans of active duty service members, 60-year anniversary of the korean war.
not that that particular order, but we hold that very serious and we take consideration to pick a theme that will represent what is being today for individuals.
again this year is the 100th year of the military aviation.
next year we'll look at the 20th anniversary of the gulf war.
we don't want to forget those individuals that participated in that war.
female aviators of world war ii, the highest award bestowed congress.
approximately 1100 women service pilots were honored at this particular program in washington, d.c.
in March this year.
38 wasps died while on active duty that never received their due honor.
aviation is also looking at the tuskegee fly girls.
beth coleman, the first world war ii, world war I fighter pilot, and today we're looking at the women pilots like tammy ducksmith -- tammy duckworth.
tammy is working with the v.a.
now as assistant secretary of public and intergovernmental affairs.
and to the point of captain arnold.
captain arnold is a combat pilot from afghanistan and iraq.
all in all, we hope that everyone in the community will come out and celebrate veterans day and participate in the veterans day parade.
we have with me today also danny ariano.
he may speak a little bit, but I’ll pass it on to you, danny.
>> I’m here the remind the court, Commissioners court and everybody else that the constitution of our Texas veterans goes all the way back to 1777.
of course, back in those days this place was called Texas.
nevertheless, our contributions to this country goes back to when the governor of spanish louisiana requested that cattle be driven up north up to the camino real and it's believed 10,000 cattle were driven north to feed the armies of george washington.
so our texans have always served and contributed to this great nation.
and, of course, the first cattle drives were 100 years before the famous chisholm and goodnight trails was the camino real.
a lot of these tejanos remained and fought in the armies of george washington.
and our motto the tejanos in action is still serving.
proof is in the naming of the post office in south Austin, a casualty of the war in iraq.
it is also renamed by us.
and then, of course, there is johnston memorial.
our choice had been to name it in honor of the killed in vietnam.
change change
>> [one moment, please, for change in captioners] f
>> but our website again information for the parade and veterans' day activities is on wwwnov 11th.org.
and I thank you.
>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
keep up the good work.
