we missed it by an hour and 12 minutes.
morning.

>> good morning, judge Biscoe, Commissioners Huber and Eckhardt.
we're glad to be here today.
last week was our annual recollect news of 4-h week and we're very proud of our program in Travis County.
now, it's expected you would be proud of your own team and program, but the real test is when it gets outside and others judge your program.
I want to announce to you today that we have two programs that have won at the national level in 4-h.
one is excellence in animal science program headed up by julie zimmerman.
another is excellence in teen program in the area of youth leadership and that's coordinated by coraly tally.
I'm going to introduce to you one of our other agents additionally with our cooperative extension program.
so we have 4-h reaching all areas of the county, all types of kids and giving them an opportunity not just to learn about the cow, sows and plowing of the stock show but speaking and public leadership.
I'm going to have julie tell you about the 4-h program.

>> the 4-h capital project has a large portion of our children that do not ever get to have the experience of the cows, sows, and plows.
they don't know where their food comes from so we have 120 children's from the title 1 schools that they are given the opportunity and after school program to go walk right outside their school and work with their goat projects for the livestock show.
so we are very excited about this program and we were very excited to have the recognition.
so thank you.

>> corey will tell us a little about the other parts of the 4-h program.

>> thank you, mr. Richter.
good morning, court, and what I would like to do is have our kids tell the story and I'll wrap up at the end, but I would like to introduce, we have steven young and sara young who will be talking about some of their 4-h experiences.

>> good morning.

>> hi, good morning.
I'm steven and my 4-h experience, I really like the

>> [indiscernible] education and I've taken civic class with my grandmother.
and what I did this summer was I went to Texas 4-h congress where I had the opportunity to learn and appreciate what my Texas legislation does with bills and how they are voted for and how they get to be made into laws.
and it was a really good experience.
met a lot of great people there.
there were some dances and stuff and social activities that they had, but the most important part was the fact that I got to learn a lot about what my Texas legislation does for my state.

>> welcome.

>> good morning.
I am with two 4-h groups.
because of your support for 4-h, I am able to learn about subjects I am interested in and combine with with 4-h which is public speaking, which I'm doing right now, photography and the environment.
but discovery 4-h I have planted over 600 trees in Travis County.
thank you for making this possible.

>> thank you.

>> and thank you for coming down.
y'all were down with our plants and our handkerchiefs before.
I really appreciate that.

>> and we have a small token of appreciation for you guys and all the support that you provide to us and we also have a one-pager we've put together that gives you an idea of other things that are going on.
we do have the whole cows and sows part and we did have a youth who exhibited a lamb in san antonio last year and won on $10,000 scholarship for that honor.
we have other kids who have won scholarships.
they plant trees, do community service, kids serving in leadership roles.
the 4-h program is so important and a huge part of a lot of people's lives.
it can't be there without the support of our Commissioners court and other people in Travis County.
thank you for everything you do for us.

>> one of the new things coming out of 4-h and you'll be hearing about it soon is a keys to the courthouse curriculum.
we're launching it in a specific after school program here on the east side of Austin and you'll be hearing more about that later.
but it's to introduce kids to leadership to set their sights on the future and what they can become.

>> good.
so the two of you have the same last name.
are you all related?

>> yes.

>> and you have first name like sara Eckhardt, our Commissioner.
we won't hold it against you.

>> [laughter] thanks for coming down.

>> thank you for such a dynamite program.

>> thanks so much.

>> [applause]

>> thank you very much.

>> thank you so much.

>> thank you.
