Item number 7, approve resolution recognizing symposium 2010 in Travis County sponsored by the central Texas chapter of the national forum for black public administrators for the Texas region.
how are you all doing?

>> just fine, judge.

>> it reads: whereas on October 21 and 22, 2010, the central Texas chapter of the national forum for black public administrators, nfbpa, will host symposium 2010, time for change, equipping you with the tools to succeed at the omni south park hotel in Austin, Texas.
whereas nfbpa has distinguished itself as the premier professional organization dedicated to the advancement of black leadership in the public sector.
whereas nfbpa has a growing reputation for strengthening the capacity of state and local government managers in a multitude of disciplines through intensive training and professional development programs. And whereas symposium 2010 will provide training sessions that focus on increasing the resiliency of public leaders who work throughout our community to provide services to the citizens of Travis County and innovations in service delivery to meet those needs.
now therefore be it resolved that we the members of the Travis County Commissioners court do hereby recognize, encourage and value the efforts of the central Texas chapter of the national forum of black public administrators and offer this resolution in thanks for the commitment to the professional development of public administrators and pledge continued support in their endeavors to improve the lives of Travis County residents through exemplary public service, and I move approval.

>> second.

>> good morning, thank you all for your patience.

>> thank you, judge.
I would just like to start off by saying I'm debra britain, president of the central Texas chapter and also the community services division director with Travis County health and human services and veterans services.
I'd like to thank the court for its support which, of course, we would not be successful locally if it were not for your support, as well as that of staff and our supervisors.
ms. Fleming is the scooter manager of Travis County health and human services and my supervisor and I thank her for her support as well and ms. Craig is the secretary of the board and she is also my mentee this year.
one of the hall mark programs of nfbta is a mentor program as well as an executive leadership institute program.
and yvette is one of the mentors in the program this career.
and we also have mr. Snipes, who is the chief of staff with the city of Austin and is also the planning chair for this year's symposium 2010.
so I think he may have some comments about the conference that he would like to share with you as well.

>> mr. -- you are not with the county yet?

>> no, sir.

>> [laughter]

>> all right.

>> judge and Commissioners, I just want to take this time to thank you again for the support for symposium 2010.
we've exceeded all of our conference goals from registration to our fundraising goals and our hope is it should bring about 250 local public administrators and enhance their growth and development.
more importantly to allow them to add to their toolbox so they can bring those skills and abilities back to their respective jobs.
we're very fortunate this year that we are also going to have a public administration today where we're hosting 75 students from the Austin aisd.
50 students summer youth participants that worked at the county this past summer and they are going to be exposed to not only city professions but also county professions to let them know that's an opportunity in the future once they graduate.
lastly, but not least, we are hosting our annual marks of excellence awards luncheon and we're fortunate to be recognized two distinguished individuals, one of which is judge Biscoe and dr. John hill, first vice president for the university of Texas.
we have sold out that event and we're looking forward to a wonderful keynote by bill strickland, the c.e.o.
for bidwell corporation and has done wonderful amounts of work not only in pittsburgh but throughout the country.
we thank you again for your support and look forward to a wonderful event.

>> no, I did not buy up all the tickets.

>> [laughter] thank you all very much.
looking forward to joining you next week.
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
and the court is sponsoring some of those kids, right?

>> yes.

>> 25 of them?

>> 50.

>> 50 of them.
are you still with the county, ms. Craig?

>> yes, I am.

>> good to see you.

>> have a wonderful event.
