Item number 5, approve proclamation declaring October 15, 2010 Travis County history day.
shall I read this?

>> I would like very much for you would read the proclamation.
I have a couple of comments too.

>> it reads, whereas the history of settlement in the Travis County area began in spanish and mexican Texas, far preceding its formal establishment on January 25th, 1840.
whereas mexican land grants record the history of some of the earliest settlers in the Travis County area.
whereas these early settlers faced many challenges and dangers, but their real sill yens helped waive the way for future generations in the state of Texas and in Travis County.
whereas this history provides available insight into our heritage and ancestry and facilitates an understanding and deep appreciation of the prosperous community in which we reside today.
and whereas Travis County seeks to provide continued opportunities to learn about and celebrate our distinguished past by and through preserving and celebrating our invaluable historic heritage.
now therefore the Travis County Commissioners court here by pro claims October 15th, 2010 as Travis County history day and encourages its citizens to celebrate the proud history and heritage of Travis County, Texas, and I move approval.

>> second.

>> morning.

>> good morning.
thank you, judge and Commissioners.
I'm steven broker, director of records management and communication resources.
and it is my happy duty today to announce the third annual Travis County history day.
the event will be held this Friday, October 15th from 11:00 to 1:00 here in the Travis County Commissioners courtroom.
we're here at the ned granger building, 314 west 11th.
you may remember that years past we've held this event at the heman marion sweatt courthouse.
this year's topic is mexican land grants and the settlement of Travis County.
our featured speaker will be dr. Frank dela teja.
and he is the professor and chairman of the professor of history at the Texas state university and former Texas state historian.
this is a public event.
we encourage the public to attend.
we will have displays of historical materials, self-guided tours and refreshments.
tvtc will provide a live cable cast.
we're sure -- we sure would like to see everybody at the event, however.
come get one of our new brochures filled with lots of information about the early days.
talk with experts, hear some fascinating stories about the early days of the community.
and I will like to thank a couple of members of the committee, please.
the Travis County bar, they have a strong sense of history and community and for the third year they've generously offered to cater the event and we really appreciate that.
the Travis County historical commission, now most people may not realize that the members of this commission are appointed individually by members of the Commissioners court.
they're all volunteers and they do an outstanding job in our community to preserve our history and make our history accessible to the public.
the Travis County archive sal staff could not ask for better partners than the members of the historical commission.
I would like to recognize barry hutchison, chair of the commission, along with margie and nancy hamilton.
the Texas general land office is providing numerous exhibits for us for this event as well.
I would also like to thank a couple of Travis County staff.
cliff from its designed this poster and he did just a brilliant job on this this year.
and you will see these around the county.
kimberly jamail with facilities management, james smith, robert rez neck and jillian porter has been on the committee.
megan jordan son from the county clerk's office.
last, but probably the most, I'd like to thank our Travis County archivist christie moreland.
she would be sitting next to me today except she's making a little history of her own and three weeks ago she and her husband had their first child.
so we couldn't be more pleased.
but if she's watching today, which I hope she is, I hope she also realizes how much respect we have for her and christie, all of your plans are right on schedule.
so we really hope that everyone will come attend this event and help us celebrate Travis County history.
thank you.

>> this Friday right here in the Commissioners courtroom.

>> yes, judge.

>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.

>> thank you very much.

>> thank you.

>> and steven, just thank you so much for all your hard work and in recognition that most of Texas' history is -- spanish is the language as much of our husband try and this is in -- history and this is in recognition of that.
I appreciate you doing.
this.

>> we plan to see you on Friday.
