Travis County Commissioners Court
February 16, 2010,
Item 26
26.
consider and take appropriate action on recommendation to establish a citizens work group on policies and fee schedule regarding horse events at the Travis County exposition center.
we had chatted about doing this late last year, and the e-mails recently con convinced e we needed to move on this.
if the court agrees, what I would do is ask the different course event groups to designate a representative and for us get mr.
norton, roger el khoury, one or two members from the court to serve on the group and basically work through the issues and come back with a recommendation.
open record request is being made, based on the information requested, there may be a whole lot of work done and a proposal to us that we categorically reject, which, you know, probably will serve more to inflame than anything else.
so this work group, I think.
is that okay?
>> mm-hmm.
>> okay.
>> I would ask that -- I agree with this number 26 effort, absolutely.
i would ask that it be conducted within a larger goal of creating a business plan for the exposition center, much like we saw with the wiz plan for star flight with regard to tolerable level of subsidy and what our overall plan is for the exposition center moving forward.
the overall perspective is for the exposition center so that this -- the horse show issue within treated in terms of the larger picture.
>> I guess I have no objection with that, except this item is a piece of that.
and to the extent those compliment each other, no problem.
you know, this envalves a lot of groups, it involves a lot of events, too, and if we can work with them in a way that we don't harm ourselves financially, I think we aught to try to do that.
>> I agree.
>> everybody wants to pay, I guess, as little as possible but they do seem to be saying, you know, work with us on this.
we understand you've got expenses to cover and you've got revenue you need to generate.
it may be that we've got to come up with a recommendation we think we can support.
i just think that we aught to give it our best effort.
>> you think we maybe will be better served if it was to come back on a separate agenda item to flush out the --
>> sure.
>> instead of making a piece of this and have it standing on its own merit.
>> yeah, I see no incompatibility at all.
there's no problem in my mind voting number 26 stand alone and bringing a September agenda item to direct staff to create a business plan, giving them a deadline, and making it in concert -- actually, the over-arching umbrella under which the agenda item number 26 item is conducted.
>> if we approve this as we seem to be headed, then what I would do is try to come up with a charge.
>> okay.
>> between now and next Tuesday, so we basically approve the charge as well as members of the committee.
there are, what, six or seven of these groups that do horse events?
and, so, we would ask them to try to designate what -- what, one person each, if we can in in -- if we can?
how does that sound?
>> that's good if it's your motion.
>> yes.
>> and a broader item on the expo center.
>> yeah.
>> discussion, all in favor, passes by unanimous vote.
we kind of took action without y'all providing input.
>> I thought that's what you wanted.
>> I saw you shaking your head.
were you saying yea or nay?
>> (inaudible).
>> all right.
move to recess till 1:30.
all in favor.
passes by unanimous vote.
