Travis County Commissioners Court

January 19, 2010,
Item 12

View captioned video.

Number 12 is to consider and take appropriate action on a following request for a reduced rental fee for use of the Travis County expo center, main arena.
a, the special olympics of Texas during the evening of February 6, 2010.
and b, the Austin partners in education during the daytime on February 6, 2010.
that's the same day.
these two event can take place the same day at the expo center?

>> yes, sir, they can.
again, this is somewhat of a negotiated, I guess, happy middle ground for both parties.
concurrently they both approached me about renting the center.
the special olympics is also renting at full price on Thursday the banquet hall and the main arena.
and have agreed to pay for that, as well as on Friday the banquet hall.
it was only later they determined they would like to have their victory party dance on Saturday evening, but at the same time as negotiating with partners with education, which is having an hispanic education event, moving it from the burger center to the expo center for the first time and it will be an annual owe vent at the expo center, as well as the olympics.
predominantly they get 18 hours, so it would not be possible to license it to them and then license it later to the special olympics without having some possible conflicts from other parties.
so they both agreed to utilize the center and kind of in a preemptive fashion, because both parties were inta mating coming here for even more substantial discounts, I had them agree to where the special olympics already having paid for the eye irene in a for -- arena for the day would pay for the hours for their event, which would be $700, and in return for partners in education working with them, making sure that they move out in time, they would apply that $700 to the full rate and give the 700-dollar discount to the partners in education.
and they're renting the main arena and the skyline club, so basically the cost to us is $700 to be able to have two events and the various items that go with the events on the back end, which would be concessions.
they're both paying the value for the hard costs, hvac, cleanup and everything else.

>> both of these really are --

>> nonprofits.

>> -- very important events.

>> it's really the only way that both could happen at the same time.
because if I license it to one they get the 18 hours an they could feasibly run long.
this way they are at least obligated to work with one another.

>> thank you for negotiating that.
that solution.

>> move approval.

>> second.

>> discussion?

>>

>> [inaudible - no mic].

>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.

>> thank you.
