Travis County Commissioners Court
December 8, 2009,
Item 16
16, consider and take appropriate action on request from the Travis County youth show for a reduced fee to use the Travis County exposition center, make exception to section 14, food and beverage catering of the Travis County exposition center license agreement, and enter into a five-year court starting in 2011 with same terms as 2010 contract.
i support this except for the part about the five year.
i think we ought to hold off on that term.
we have authorized them to prepare, cook and serve food and nonalcoholic beverages to students, parents and supporters of the show, and as far as we know, the caterer hasn't suffered and is kind of used to this, right?
>> correct.
it's all predicated on it being nonrevenue food that's being given away.
>> yeah.
>> at no cost.
>> and they've been doing this out there many, many years.
>> correct.
>> and I know they are here.
you understand the explanation about multi-year?
>> yes.
>> move approval.
>> second.
>> discussion?
>> I will vote in favor of this even though this is -- and it's a great thing, but it's a nongovernmental entity.
the previous two were governmental entities.
it's totally outside the policy which again illustrates why we really need to revisit that policy.
don't worry, you are getting it.
>> jim sylvester, vice president of Travis County youth show.
fully understand where the Commissioners are coming from.
we have no objections to that at all.
>> yeah, I only -- I only remain concerned about the sustainability of the facility over time.
and I do know that you all do what you can to support the facility generally.
>> jim, since you are there, how many persons are actually -- I guess as far as the outreach with the youth persons, as far as the numbers are concerned, approximately how many persons are actually reached in this particular effort that you are doing out there?
as far as the --
>> Commissioner Davis, I'm the president of the Travis County youth show.
and we have approximately 960 entries this year.
>> 960?
>> yes, sir.
>> goodness.
okay.
>> and all of these students will be exhibiting either livestock and/or youth fair projects, which our youth fair projects include everything from woodworking, baking, horticulture, arts and crafts, photography, all sorts of nature of projects.
and then they go to the auction sale and the auction sale that we have -- our livestock auction is a ribbon sale which means the individual exhibitors get to keep their project after they are purchased by our gracious entrepreneurs of Travis County and the kids get to take their projects home with them at the end of the sale and exhibit them farther down the road at a major livestock show or utilize them however they see fit.
>> that's a lot of folks.
>> yes, sir.
we reach out to a lot of children.
>> that's a lot of folks.
that's very positive.
so thank you.
>> thank you.
>> do we have a motion?
any more discussion?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
>> thank you all.
>> thank you.
