approve proclamation honoring the 40th anniversary of the american federation of state, county and municipal employees there was a representative here earlier.

>> it reads whereas the american federation of state, county, municipal employees, afscme, represents its members in negotiating matters of concerns such as pay raises, health care benefits, job security, health and safety before the Travis County Commissioners court, whereas afscme local 1624 is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its chartering as the union representing county employees, whereas afscme local 1624 has been a consistent voice and effective advocate for its members and all Travis County employees; whereas afscme members and their co-workers faithfully and diligently provide essential public services on which our community relies, whereas afscme local 1624 through its partnership with Travis County has helped improve the health, safety, morale and working conditions of county employees, and whereas Travis County expresses its appreciation for afscme's dedication to more than 1.4 million members throughout america, now therefore be it resolved that the Travis County Commissioners court does hereby proclaim December 8th, 2009 as afscme local 1624 day in Travis County and congratulations afscme local 1624 for -- and its members on this landmark occasion and I move approval.

i know on behalf of all of our members, city and county, state municipal employees, we would like to thank you for the proclamation, acknowledging our 40 years in Austin and Travis County.
i know that I also remember with fond memories or predecessors, Commissioner Gomez, that allowed these check offs at Travis County in the early '80s that allowed the employees a better opportunity to join afscme as a labor union for its work that you have done, we certainly appreciate the efforts.
i remember with fond memories, a gentleman named ben fisher who died recently, one of our first members of afscme, a lady named theresa perez, an organizer who hit the streets and signed up a lot of the members that shared in a lot of the successes that we have accomplished over the years.
for that we do thank you for this proclamation.
