Travis County Commissioners Court
November 17, 2009,
Item 4
4.
approve resolution recognizing terry love for his many years of service with Travis County transportation and natural resources road maintenance and to the residents of Travis County.
is mr.
love here?
please come forward with many relatives, friends, co-workers.
>> judge, don ward, Travis County t.n.r.
thank you for this opportunity to recognize terry love for his 28 years plus, I was reminded this morning.
i think he went straight from high school to Travis County and considerably way up the ladder, so this is a good example of how you can start out at the -- kind of the low running and move your way -- low rung and move your way up and become one of the executive members in the county.
so just want to congratulate him and -- and thank you very much, terry.
>> thank you.
>> that's mr.
love with the red shirt on.
>> yes, sir.
>> he looks much too young to retire.
>> [laughter]
>> should I read the resolution?
>> I want to say something first.
>> [laughter]
>> mr.
love, what's your choice, joe gieselman or the county judge?
>> [laughter] go ahead, joe.
>> well, he's young, but he's put in a lot of road miles, let me tell you that.
terry goes back a long way.
i really appreciate the service that he has provided to Travis County constituents.
and more so t.n.r.
and all its stages.
i think he's gone there every evolution of the department.
terry was really a representative of the workers in road and bridge offices.
he knew the operations, he knew what was going on.
among the workforce.
you could always rely on terry to give me a pretty good pulse for how the troops were doing.
and represented them.
and with management later became a manager himself, did an excellent job in providing guidance to our workforce.
so, terry, I hope you thoroughly enjoy your retirement and thank you for everything that you have given us.
>> thank you.
>> terry gets a beautiful proclamation, also a plaque.
so do we forgo reading it and just get comments?
terry probably wanted to chat with the Commissioners court during his years of employment here.
now you are free to say whatever you choose, mr.
love.
>> well, I have enjoyed working here.
and started out, like joe had said earlier, had come on and when the -- when each precinct was its own entity at that time.
ms.
richards was the Commissioner that I had started with in precinct 3.
if that gives you any idea of the years that I have worked for Travis County.
and I would like to thank the guy that's I have worked with that have put in lots of time and effort and energy and learning the processes it takes to go to doing what it takes out there in the field to, you know, build roads, do drainage work, keeping the -- the day to day operations going on, including mowing, patching and all of the other things that a lot of people take for granted that you just see happen.
and I would just like to thank them for their time in doing that, thank y'all for the opportunity to be employed by you as long as I have been.
and all I have to say in my retirement is that mr.
love is retired and fish are scared.
>> [laughter]
>> well, more than 28 years in the transportation department working with joe gieselman, to me says a whole lot about your courage --
>> [laughter] and patience.
>> joe was in the engineering division and not leading us at the time back when I started.
but -- he -- I think he's one of the only other employees that has more time in than I do.
so -- so I don't know when he's planning on vacating, but -- but I know he's a fisherman, too, I will keep him updated on my score.
>> well, then our proclamation we basically extend a special thanks to you for your many years of dedication.
and in the beautiful plaque, it's given in appreciation for your years of dedicated service to the employees and constituents of Travis County.
beautiful, not purchased with county money.
right?
we can all enjoy it and feel safe and secure.
>> [laughter] any other comments from any of the -- please come forward, mr.
castro and if others have brief comments, we would be happy to get them.
>> thank you, judge, good morning judge Biscoe and Commissioners, my name is jimmy castro, I'm here to speak on my own behalf of the terry this is what's known as a certificate of appreciation from one citizen to another.
and if I may read it, it's a certificate for terry.
it says terry, I just wants to take a moment of your time to congratulate you on your service with the Travis County transportation and natural resources road and maintenance department and Travis County.
your hard work and dedication is appreciated by the entire Austin community.
it takes special people like yourself to make the Travis County transportation natural resources road maintenance department and Travis County the success it is today.
special describes people who act from the heart and keep in mind the hearts of others.
finally, terry, you earn this recognition the old fashioned way.
you worked for it.
again, thanks for your time, but especially congratulations on a job well done.
>> [ applause ]
>> anybody else?
open mic?
you will be sorely miss the here at Travis County.
thank god we know your phone number and address, don't we, joe.
>> thank you so much.
>> thank you, terry.
>> thank you.
>> [ applause ] let's go down and take a picture with mr.
love.
mr.
love, this picture may be worth something one day.
you are wondering why, why would they want to take a picture with me?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
by the way, there's a motion and second to approve the proclamation.
we don't want to does ms.
love to bring that back.
