2.
approve resolution declaring October 4 through 10, 2009 as "Travis County 4-h week.
we do have several persons to receive this one.
should I read it?
okay.
it reads whereas the youth and volunteers of any community are its greatest natural resource.
whereas 4-h is one of the largest youth organizations in Texas with nearly one in every 10 Texas youth involved in 4-h, whereas 4-h and Texas claims over 658,810 youth members and over 42,500 adult and youth volunteers.
while Travis County's 4-h program numbers over 20,000 members and over 400 volunteers.
whereas 4-h as part of the Texas agrilife extension service is a program where youth learn together in all kinds of project, events and activities, and whereas 4-h has been helping youth and adults learn, grow and work together for more than 100 years, now therefore be it resolved that we the members of the Travis County Commissioners court do hereby proclaim August 4th through 10th, 2009, as Travis County 4-h week and urge the people of this community to take advantage of the opportunity to become more aware of this special program which gives youth the chance to learn together and on their own as part of Travis County 4-h and to join us in recognizing the unique partnership between Travis County and Texas a&m extension system and I enthusiastically move approval.

>> second.

>> good morning.

>> good morning, judge.
my name is skip richter, county extension director, Texas agrilife extension, part of the health and human services department here in Travis County.
we are really proud of our 4-hers here, not just because they are youth doing good with themselves and growing and learning many things, but because we think that we're unique.
no other county in the state has a 4-h program as diverse as ours, we have the only urban animal science program.
4-h traditionally began with the stock shows and home canning and things.
we have taken that to kids who would never have that opportunity before.
that's unique here in Travis County.
also, we're the only county with the only muslim 4-h club in the state.
we're very proud of that as well.
we are also very proud of the fact that here in Travis County our capitol 4-h program has taken 4-h to other youth, not just urban animal science, but youth in the inner city that wouldn't have the opportunity to learn and grow in that way.
i would like to introduce you to a few of our staff.

>> [indiscernible] is with our cep program out of prairie view and works with the 4-h program there.

>> hi.

>> I'm introducing

these are my lovely young ladies and they have both been in the project for at least three years, one is at blanton elementary school and the other one started with us at dawson and now she attends fulmore and so they are looking forward to working hard with their goat program this year and showing at the livestock show.

>> tally, our 4-h agent with agrilife.

>> good morning, I work with more the traditional programs that we have, I have several 4-hers, I cannot forget our volunteers, too, that work with our program.
they are from our discover 4-h, recently changed their name to that.
they are doing this Saturday doing a thing called one day 4-h, all across the state of Texas, at least 10,000 that are going to be doing unique community service opportunities, some of them have taken on their own thing.
this group is going to be doing storm --

>> [indiscernible]

>> 300 trees,.

>> planting.

>> on Friday you all are --

>> planting 300 trees.

>> I thought they were doing something else

>> [inaudible - no mic]

>> okay, they are going to plant 300 trees.
one thing that I wanted to mention, this summer we had four 4-hers who brought home $30,000, attending Texas tech, university of Texas, sol ross and Texas a&m university.
we also had four kids go on to compete the at 4-h national shooting sports in nebraska.
with all of our kids doing awesome things here, kids are also doing a lot of other great things, too.
thank you so much for your support.

>> thank you.

>> looks like you are staying busy.

>> yeah.
we do appreciate all of your support and your time.
thank you.

>> thank you.
and your time, thank you.

>> and the kids have a special gift for you today.
and we have -- we have a mum, a potted mum, also some of the grocery bag, hopefully when you go buy your groceries, they are real handy.

>> keep one in your car, it's great.
keep one in your car so you will never be at the grocery store without a bag, great.

>> thank you all.

>> I will also let noel tell you a little bit about something he brought.
he works with our capital program.

>> okay.

>> good morning.
i have also brought some long sleeved t-shirts because the weather is supposed to change and this is so you can wear it when the weather changes this week and you can look at yourself in the mirror and see 4-h logos on yourself.

>> I hope you brought an extra large.

>> I did.
i brought one just for you.

>> [laughter]

>> thank you.

>> we may have to check with our county attorney and see if we can receive all of these gifts.

>> [laughter] all of a sudden I feel like a wealthy person.

>> this is a lot of gifting y'all.

>> [one moment please for change in captioners]

>> we have a rule that says if we do a proclamation for you, you have to take it with you.

>> thank you, sir.

>> thank you very much of

>> thank you.
all righty.
so ms.
porter won't be distracted the rest of the meeting, we will put these down low.
number --

>> judge,

>> [indiscernible]

>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
judy -- after receiving all of those gifts, we wouldn't dare vote against the proclamation there.
