approve resolution to the agriculture in support of a grant for meals on wheels and more.
we do have mr.
pruett here with us today.
whereas Texas department of agriculture home delivered meal grant program, a resolution of the the county of travis, Texas, certifying that the county has made a grant to meals on wheels and more, an organization that provides home delivered meals to homebound persons in the county, who are elderly and/or have a disability certifying that the county has approved the organization's accounting system or fiscal agent.
whereas the organization desires to apply for grant funds from the Texas department of agriculture to supplement and extend existing services to homebound persons in the county, who are elderly and/or have a disability per student to the home delivered meal grant program, hereinafter referred to as simply the program, whereas the program rules require the county in which an organization is providing home delivered meal services to make a grant to the organization, in order for the organization to be eligible to receive program grant funds; whereas the program rules require the county to approve the organization's accounting system or fiscal agent in order for the organization to be eligible to receive program grant funds.
now, therefore, be it resolved that we the members of the Travis County Commissioners court do hereby certify that Travis County has made a grant to the organization in the amount of $115,026, to be used between the first day of January, 2009, and the 31st day of December, 2009, that the organization provides home delivered meals to homebound persons in the county who are elderly and/or have a disability and that Travis County has approved the organization's accounting system or fiscal agent.
be it further resolved that the Travis County Commissioners court urges the Texas departments of agriculture to provide the requested grant funds to meals on wheels and more and I move approval.

>> second.

>> I'm happy to add, I think that we've had a contract with you for many, many years to date.

>> you have, judge.

>> second that, judge.

>> I'm dan prewitt the director of meals on wheels here.
this is daniel goldstein, got this money down really across the state of Texas.
i just wanted to say a very quick thank you to the court to sherri flemming and her department for supporting us and supporting seniors and folks with disabilities in our community.
i'll tell you what a difference it made.
your support has let us draw down over the past two years $2.25 million into our program.
so it's been huge.
we've been able to leverage it in a big way and what we have done with that primarily is provide a -- one of the largest second meal programs in the state of Texas and these are for folks who get that initial meal from us, but have very little in their house.
we are able to get a second meal to them.
we're doing that in a huge way.
so y'all have been exceedingly generous to us.
we are very grateful and one of the things that I think we can all be proud of is how we've been able to leverage the money and bring in a substantial amount of money to feed people in need in the community.
we thank you for that.
and what we did is we appreciate you reading the resolution, judge, it was a long one.
i'm going to read, if I may, a certificate of appreciation to you.
certificate of appreciation presented to the Travis County Commissioners court for its ongoing supported programs that help defray homebound elderly and disabled of Travis County live independently with dignity in their homes.
y'all have been doing that for a long time.
we are exceedingly grateful to you, thank you, judge.

>> you use how many volunteers now?

>> 5,400 volunteers, 190 corporate teams and one thing that we can be very proud of in this community is that there is no other community -- I think at this stage of the game in the nation that has as many volunteers as we do deliver meals.
it saves the community a ton of money.

>> you are doing a great job.
really appreciate what you are doing, kind of like a safety net.
not only do you deliver meals, but if something is not right around the house or who you are delivering the meals to, you can kind of notice that, too.
so it's kind of a safeguard, also.
you kind of get used to the folks, the folks used to seeing you out there.
they welcome the meals but also welcome your presence and your company.
so judge -- you all are doing a great job.

>> thank you, Commissioner, we're happy to do it.

>> it's a lot deeper than just delivering meals.

>> it is indeed.
we have a multitude of services, not just meals, it's that contact.

>> exactly.

>> the volunteers that have with people every day.
they seem so is slated.
we are -- isolated.
we are honored to work with you, putting together a crackerjack program with the Travis County senior centers, soon we will be able to give you more information about that.

>> keep up the good work.

>> thanks, can we give this to you?

>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.

>> we have a beautiful proclamation here for you and the Texas department of agriculture.
