Travis County Commissioners Court
September 29, 2009,
Item 21
Number 21.
approve modification no.
1 to contract no.
ps090071vr with youth advocate program for mentor program services.
>> good morning, judge, Commissioners.
>> good morning.
>> threw me off.
i was thinking we were going to do number 7.
>> [one moment please for change in captioners] could you explain what this item is all about, what services will be provided for the youth?
>> well, it's mentoring services and I don't have -- I don't have a breakdown of the services, but they go out and mentor them in different -- different things.
educational-type things.
maybe -- I can get that information.
i don't want to talk out of turn, but --
>> sure.
>> I would assume education and, you know, just being with the kids and helping them.
>> sure.
and specifically, judge and Commissioners, this is exactly one of the power points that I presented under my presentation of the budget.
the juvenile justice system is growing the population.
we're trying to keep our kids graduated, keep in school and graduated, but sometimes things occur that they are involved in juvenile justice system, and again, I want to commend this court and really it's not a negative, but actually a positive and to enhance funding for these type of programs for the youth, mentoring and tutoring, et cetera, when they are incarcerated or not incarcerated, but I think it behooves us to if there are any students or youth that are in the juvenile justice system, not program but direct them in a positive direction to become a productive member of society so they can help other kids out and, again, I applaud this item, no problems with me, but these are the programs I was talking about, continue the good work on this and let's -- if we can, I know the downturn in the economy is hard on the budget and funding, but these are things that will help kids stay on track, stay focused, graduate and become productive members of the society and I want to thank you for this.
>> move approval.
>> second.
>> discussion?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
