Travis County Commissioners Court
August 4, 2009,
Item 3
>> let's go to 3, which ought to take one minute, then we'll go to number 5.
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
thank you very much, ms.
porter.
3 is to consider and take appropriate action considering the prohibition of outdoor burning in the areas of Travis County.
>> good morning, again.
herschel lee, Travis County fire marshal.
the conditions have not improved.
as a matter of fact, they have worsened, but only slightly.
the recent few rains have kept our drought index in the 670 range.
i received a couple of replies yesterday from a local fire chiefs, and one of them, I won't mention his name, but he said he thinks it will rain in October.
so that's not much help for us right now.
another one mentioned that a citizen in south Travis County was mowing their lawn, a blade struck a rock and started a fire just from mowing.
and they lost about two and a half acres.
yesterday there was a fire in northeast Travis County which burned about 45 acres.
so the current burn ban does not expire until August the 19th.
it is our recommendation to leave that burn ban in place at this time.
>> so by taking no action we leave in place the order prohibiting outdoor burning.
>> yes, sir.
>> thank you very much.
>> thank you.
