Travis County Commissioners Court
July 28, 2009,
Item 14
>> what item are you there on?
>> I mentioned item no.
14 was -- great report obviously --
>> [indiscernible] that's a -- there's a couple of comments that I want to make about it.
>> go ahead, make them.
on the social data, that's really a great point is that -- my point is of course the list that includes poverty, chemical dependency, legalized -- legalized hemp can help solve all of these problems.
all of those, poverty, chemical dependency, lack of health care, all of that can be helped by -- by the
>> [indiscernible] of pot smokers.
the other thing again similarly on the last page or on page 11 actually, she on the experience and impact thing on character development, for some reason they have attitude towards drugs.
which I understand a lot of the people if you include alcohol in that, a lot of people sitting in jail right now are because of alcohol inspired crimes, a whole lot of other people are sitting rotting in jails because of idiotic war on pot smokers.
i just wanted to again point out --
>>
>> [indiscernible]
>> this particular group came before us in the work session some time ago.
of course we were very amazed on some of the statistics they had given out.
especially referring to the h.i.v.
situation among african-american women.
the -- the focus being on those between the age of 25 and 34.
basically because the fact is that there's significant increase as far as the deaths, the cause of death of these persons.
it's h.i.v.
so we of course heard the report and encouraged them to go forward, the project to go forward, and we looked at about $110,000 actually coming from the Commissioners court, per se, out of hhs bond of course we got the city of Austin also assisting in this.
making a uniform effort to not only educate but also try to decrease and curtail this tremendous -- tremendous striving increase striving amongafrican-american n this county.
so this is something that we wanted to move forward with.
a good start, a good project.
we can actually glean some reports that will come back with us as far as 2010 is concerned.
i think the money is very well spent because when you look at these statistics, as they are now, trying to focus on these age groups of black african-american women, then I think it's a worthwhile project and so -- so I'm -- very supportive of it.
>> you are so right.
i'm also very supportive of this report.
and what you are trying to do.
i wanted to throw in comments about it.
>> thank you, sir.
