approve resolution urging all residents to recognize memorial day.
it reads whereas all citizens of Travis County understand and appreciate the sacrifices that their sons, daughters, husbands, wives, friends and neighbors have made by willingly answering the call to service.
some even giving their lives so that we live free in this great democracy.
whereas there are in excess of one million veterans of all wars in which the united states has participated.
who have lost their lives in defense of our country, whereas many of our returning soldiers may suffer from combat related mental health issues and may not receive the care that their honorable service merits; whereas the true incidence of suicide among veterans is now -- is not known, and according to a recent congressional research service report, based on numbers from the center to disease control and prevention, the v.a.
estimates that 18 veterans a day or 6,500 a year take their own lives, but that number includes vets from all wars, whereas today our servicemen and women continue to inspire and strengthen our nation, going above and beyond the call of duty as part of the greatest military the world has ever known, whereas we call on all americans to pause on Monday 3:00 p.m.
to observe a gnat moment of remembrance, as a moment of reflection, recognized by an act of congress to put the memorial back in memorial day in honor of america's fallen heros, and whereas the Travis County Commissioners court office vets helping vets is committed to -- committed and dedicated to service one veteran at a time.
now therefore be it resolved that we the Travis County Commissioners court, do hereby proclaim may 25th as memory day in Travis County, and call upon the citizens of Travis County to observe memorial day beginning may 23rd through may 31st, 2009.
with the appropriate programs and activities focusing on the achievements of those who have served this great nation.
and show an appreciation of their service with the understanding that no words can adequately express the gratitude and pride that we hold for these brave men and women who so galantly give up hope for the future and a deep appreciation for the past.

i have placed on your desk a list of activities that will take place during this memorial day time period?
i have placed some issues on this list that are state -wide,particularly the second o, the lone star of heros race across Texas.
that is starting up in amarillo.
through lubbock, all the way through Texas down to -- down to Austin and fort hood area.
other areas in here will be for the 23rd which is Saturday the memorial service at the memorial cemetery by the tejanos in action.
as you go over, the 23rd and the 24th, which will be in Round Rock, the amistad festival memorial day service.
of course on the 25th itself, memorial day, we have a -- we have a -- a list of -- of programs that will be taking place throughout the city and the county.
williamson county sun city.
10:00 the sums cemetery and 10:00 at live oak cemetery, sponsored by the vfw post 3377.
and the memorial day service at the Texas state cemetery.
i also put in the -- the -- the abilene, Texas dedication of the -- of the Texas state veterans cemetery.
this will be a dedication.
this is the newest state cemetery for the state of Texas.
and of course at 10:30, at the cook walden memorial service.
as you go down to 12:00.
the Austin core of rangers will do a performance at the capital rotunda.
that's the annual program.
i think on -- on may the 26th, Tuesday is a program of interest which will be the johnson 16 memorial service.
as you know at the high school is renamed after -- after -- was renamed the east side memorial high school, these events are going to take place throughout the county and I encourage each and every one of you, I encourage the citizens of Travis County to get out and participate in these programs.
on the behalf of the 60,000 veterans of this county and the veterans organizations that are sponsoring and participating in these programs, I accept this proclamation.
lastly, I would like to make a quote from abraham lincoln, any nation that does not honor its heros, will not long endure.
