communication Huber?
>> yes, we have some nameless school representatives here today.
I would like for you all to take a seat and introduce yourselves.
>> I’m janie and -- and this is the president of our group, and the former president and treasurer, merna and to my left here is layerry oats, the Texas director of the Texas historical commission.
on my right is barry hutchinson, chairman of the Travis County historical commission.
>> thank you so much for being here today.
I have to think this is the kind of agenda item that just makes me so proud to live in central Texas.
this -- this school I think is -- represents what -- what -- what really demonstrates a sense of community.
namely a school with a one room school house that was -- that was first organized in the -- in the mid 1800s.
I believe this was built in 1909, these people here and -- and a number of others out that live in the nameless school area, which is by the way located off of nameless road, which is just north -- it's just north of -- of 1431.
kind of between Jonestown and Leander.
but this -- this area out there -- has really pulled together with a sense of community to restore this school.
it was deeded early on to Travis County.
but -- but it's -- it had sort of lane in disrepair since it quit functioning at the school in the 1940's.
these people pulled together, raised money, gotten historical commission, lcra, pec grants, raised, cook books, wrote a history.
really done a lot to -- to raise over $07,000 to -- $70,000 to repair and preserve this school.
Travis County court resolution, whereas 2009 marks the centennial of nameless school.
whereas students have been educated at the site from 1870 to 1945 and whereas the community has supported nameless school over the years by providing materials -- building materials, labor and leadership and whereas the Lake Travis extension education association has taken care of nameless school since they started meeting in the building in 1960.
and whereas the Texas historical Commissioner and the lower colorado river authority providing grant moneys to restore the school building and whereas nameless school is a treasured historical site in Travis County and a source of pride for our community.
now therefore be it resolved by the Travis County Commissioners court, that all citizens in Travis County and the state of Texas are urged to recognize the value in keeping and restoring historical sites.
both small and large.
and be it further resolved that the Lake Travis extension education association be commended for their work.
this 21st day of April, 2009.
>> okay.
>> I move approval.
>> second.
>> did you all want to speak before we vote?
>> would anybody like to make more additional comments?
you might want to talk about your event on Saturday.
>> we are -- it's the -- this is the -- the 100th birthday for the school saint it's been restored -- and since it's been restore and we're inviting the community and anyone that's -- that's interested to come out to a barbecue from 11:00 in the morning until 4:00 in afternoon and we'll have barbecue and old fashioned games for the children and music and it will be a nice community affair that we hope all will enjoy and -- and celebrate this event.
>> very good.
>> we appreciate you all's resolution.
>> all those in favor?
unanimous.
thank you.
>> thank you for coming.
>> thank you.
>> thank you very much.
>> do you have any artifacts from the original school built in 1850?
>> not sure.
we have a -- we have a paddle that was found, it's old looking, we framed that.
what else do we have?
steps from the hold post office that was established in nameless in 1880.
we have the steps that are scored, those were the post office steps.
we have those at the school.
and -- and -- and --
>> the original -- not the original desk, but the desks that were there from 1909.
in the school.
>> one of the old black boards.
and -- and everything was left as it was, still is.
>> voting, cemetery there, quite a few families that have family reunions there.
we are hoping to get a little better entry into it.
hoping that if y'all will work with us on that and -- and we think that it's a beautiful place and it's a wonderful little park for -- for Travis County to be very proud of.
>> very good.
thank you for all of your work.
>> thank you.
>> isn't it -- is this true that nameless is nameless with nameless because -- because they refused to put in a name to the post office to the u.s.
postal service.
>> they kept -- they would apply to -- it was called fair view.
and so they -- they kept applying -- they gave other names, they said no fairview is already in use.
they presented cross creek.
and -- I don't know what else, but about six names and finally they just said well -- well let it be nameless and they say let it be damned.
and so the u.s.
postal service took the implied name of nameless and --
>> [laughter] and there it is.
>> very good.
>> so it's been nameless ever since.
>> super.
>> thank you so much.
>> I would like to commend both the club and the county historical commission.
we have a -- we have a new logo and tag line at the Texas historical commission and it's -- it's real places telling real stories.
much of -- many of those things that define us as texans are fairly vernacular but they tell everybody's story.
so you are to be commended on the appointments to the county historical commission, they serve you well, our resource, one of the best in the state.
with folks like jenny and her folks pulling together to save the place that make us us, then we continue to have the unique character that Texas is throughout the state, so congratulations to both of you.
>> thank you.
>> thank you all.
>> thanks so much.
