Travis County Commissioners Court
March 24, 2009,
Item 4
4 is to consider and take appropriate action regarding the prohibition of outdoor burning in the uncorpd areas of Travis County.>> I have information to present to you regarding the burn band, our index is 526, which is up 25 points from last week when the item was before you.
there's a forecast for approximately one-half inch of rain in the next 100 hours, which will be beneficial, but I don't think it will get us back down below the 500 mark that we typically shoot for.
i received some information from fire dispatch about the numbers of fires in unincorporated Travis County and for the last week that we had the burn ban in place, there were approximately 30 responses by emergency service districts for trash, small grass and brushfires during this past week when the ban was lifted, that response number went up to 56 for unincorporated Travis County, so the numbers almost doubled.
we yesterday visited with the esd fire chiefs about their feelings concerning this, and the response was unanimous from them to request a place -- place a burn ban back for Travis County.
so my recommendation, the recommendation of emergency management and the fire chiefs of the area is for a burn ban for Travis County.
>> what's the state doing?
>> sir?
>> what's the state fire marshal's office doing?
>> I saw chief maldonado yesterday, but we didn't discuss the burn ban in particular.
all the counties contiguous to Travis County currently have burn bans.
the only one that is in the area that doesn't have a burn ban is lafayette county, which is a number of miles east of here.
the drought is still in place and predicted to deepen for this area.
>> move that we approve an order prohibiting outdoor burning.
>> second.
>> for those who wants to know what that means, what's allowed and disallowed, they can call the fire marshal's office and pete baldwin at the emergency services office -- emergency management office.
what's your number again?
>> the number for the Travis County fire marshal's office?
854-4621.
there will also be a -- a copy of the burn ban will be posted on our web site and be available there.
>> okay.
discussion?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
any other emails -- any ugly emails can be sent to any member of the court except the county judge.
>> thank you all.
