>> now, we do have several people here on a couple of items.
why don't we go to the visitation center, and that is number 14.
receive update on advicetation center construction project at Travis County community justice center, state jail, others known as, as take appropriate action.
there is good news as a result of our getting back with the Texas officials after last week's meeting.

>> yes, sir.
i'm sorry.
i'm roger jeffreys, justice and public safety, executive manager.
and yes, sir, we were able to -- kimberly, myself, roger, jim were able to get with the Texas department of criminal justice on a couple of occasions and hammer out a plan that we all dwrea to.
agree to.

>> good morning, roger el khoury, director of the construction department.
i have an 11 by 17 plan about the -- what we agreed on to make this happen as far as the accessibility, which we're going to construct a sidewalk back to the original intent of the project.
the parking of the two handicapped parking or the -- they're going to be on exist willing asphalt, -- existing asphalt, but we have to make sure that the existing asphalt has been overlaid because it has been deteriorated.
the warden has said he approve it as long as huntsville approved it.
so we send this plan to huntsville for the department down there to approve our plan.
and I think -- and we check all these requirements about slope of the sidewalk and the -- also the -- also the slope of the parking lot.
and they are in compliance with the a.d.a.
accessibility rules.
i think when we construct those two items and we've got the -- we will ask the tdlr inspector to come and inspect and pass this project.
the cost of that is right now less than $4,000.

>> so the circle drive all the way around the building --

>> it's gone.

>> what a beautiful thing.

>> [ laughter ]

>> good work.

>> excellent.

>> did you want to talk about next steps?

>> I'm jim barr with facilities management department.
i wrote a memo yesterday to roger jeffreys and kimberly pierce and just to outline the next -- the remaining steps.
it's really a matter of getting the contractor on board to construct this handicapped parking area and a sidewalk to the front porch of the center.
once that's done we'll call for the tdlr inspector, who will review it under the Texas accessibility standards, which is very similar to the a.d.a., which most people refer to it as.
once that's passed, I'll get with clayton poshus, who is the contract administrator in huntsville.
he will schedule a final inspection, bring some of the facilities people down from huntsville, we'll go over and make a final punch list if there are any items left.
we will then take care of that.
i will have a form filled out.
there's about three different forms to fill out.
we'll get senior warden howell to put his signature of approval to accept the project, and then that will get forwarded to the capital improvements review committee in huntsville.
i'll write a letter for judge Biscoe's signature that will request a formal donation acceptance from the board of criminal justice, and then the thing should be on the committee's agenda, on the board's agent for April 3rd at the crown plaza hotel here in Austin for their normal meeting.
if it's not on that agenda, it will then be put on the June agenda for donation acceptance.
we discussed a little bit with the warden about whether they can use it prior to this donation acceptance.
i don't know what -- whether there's any particular consideration about that or not, but the building is certainly -- once the handicapped parking and the sidewalk are in, it's certainly available for use.
it got power, it's fully functional.
it's complete.

>> let me make sure I understand it.
so the warden has approved this design.

>> has approved the design, but he said I approve it, but I want huntsville to approve it first.

>> so it has been sent to huntsville.

>> today it was sent to huntsville.

>> but we don't have huntsville's approval yet.

>> we expect within a week we should have an approval.

>> in writing.

>> absolutely.
everything in writing.

>> [ laughter ]

>> so we wait on the approval.
at the same time -- and the -- if approved the total cost will be 4,000, you say?

>> no more than 4,000, yes.

>> and to do this work will we get a small local contractor or are we still thinking about tnr?

>> no, small contractor.
the contractor that we're working with or or somebody else that we know that can do the work more efficiently and quality work with less cost.

>> okay.

>> and I would like to do the private contractor doing the work.
as a matter of fact, I quote a quote from the private contractor on the project, can I start tomorrow?
so we can do it within two weeks when we get the approval.

>> so this is part of our central stimulus.

>> it's a small amount now compared to where we thought we might be next week.
questions?

>> let me mention that the request for the carpet was dropped as well.

>> good, good.

>> we think that it's better without carpet.

>> I think so, myself, because of the maintenance problem with it, because so many people are going to be in and out, and that carpet is going to be really -- replaced within two years.
usually carpet should be replaced eight to 10 years.
with this kind of facility over there and the usage, it will be a place that every two years.
so we recommend no carpet.
the warden has said he will take it and one of his staff he says he's going to do some waxing inside and some kind of different type of finishes.

>> so what kind of flooring would there be in the children's area?

>> they're already carpeted.

>> it's carpeted already.

>> yes.

>> anything else?
today?
we'll have it back on the agenda at the appropriate time when it's ready for additional action, right?

>> okay.

>> thank y'all very much.
we appreciate your prompt attention to this issue.

>> thank you very much.
