Travis County Commissioners Court
December 16, 2008
Item A1
You will see two boxes over behind ms. Porter. And they pertain to a 1, receive results regarding verification of signatures on petition from the Travis County sheriff's office association for an election on collective bargaining and take appropriate action. Deliver to me the same day the backup e-mail -- backup memo is dated were those two boxes. One is full of the original petitions, which the -- which county staff copied and then used the copies as working papers, and I have advised the officers association that there are information is available electronically if they want to do further work, but these become a permanent part of the court's record. So at this time I move that as a court we formally receive the original and working copies of the petition and take no further action.
>> second.
>> by the way, the conclusion there was that there is an insufficient number of verifiable signatures.
>> insufficient?
>> yeah, short. There's a shortfall.
>> what is the number?
>> 5%. Registered voters voting in the gubernatorial general election.
>> general election then. Whatever that is.
>> so that was -- but for the county -- well -- was that to appear on the next election -- was that for the may election upcoming for city council or was it supposed to come about?
>> they have to be registered voters in Travis County.
>> right.
>> and you had to secure the signatures from beginning November 4th, which is election, back that up 180 days.
>> okay.
>> so that went back to may 8th, I think.
>> okay. All right.
>> so a few were thrown out because of that. Quite a few were not registered voters in Travis County.
>> okay.
>> but they needed 11,415 and in fact they were given credit for 10,648. Now, a lot of those, in my view, you really couldn't make out the signature of the person or the name. Signature was not legible and the printing of the name was not either, and in that case there's no way to give them credit for. But it would be hard to come up with the difference there. It's about 800, isn't it?
>> about 1,000.
>> 10, 6 and 11 -- 11, 4.
>> okay. Were you good in math?
>> 867. Sorry. 857.
>> 867.
>> no, it wasn't clearly.
>> but --
>> but anyway, the bottom line is that it was not enough signatures to come on the next ballot.
>> right.
>> for the city or county or whoever.
>> well, we had up until 90 days -- no, 70 days before the may 5th election.
>> that's the next general election.
>> we have 70 days -- up to 70 days before then to call an election based on complying with the law. So if they are able to get with the voting registrar's office and come up with the 860 plus that they need, up to that deadline we can call in the election. But that seems to be a big hill to climb at this point. But our action today is for naturally receive the official documents.
>> I'm really bad at math. It's 767.
>> the county judge -- county judge estimated 800. He didn't do well in the spelling bee, but he was real good in arithmetic.
>> you are so bad at math.
>> all in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
