Travis County Commissioners Court
December 16, 2008
Item 2
Two is to consider and take appropriate action regarding the prohibition of outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Travis County.
>> thank you very much. I'm danny hobby, the executive manager of emergency services. To my left is assistant fire marshal herschel lee. We're here today to ask you to continue by sign agriculture new order for a burn ban regarding the prohibition of outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Travis County. As you know, you riently signed an order. It expires tomorrow. So it's necessary for us to sign another order and it would go into effect until January the 14th. We still have not received over the last 30 days a significant amount of rainfall. And so therefore we are still in severe drought conditions. Our drought index is still way over what it should be as far as this reading. As of yesterday it was 669. And we try to keep it below 500. So we are in a situation of where our citizens should be very careful and as a result it's necessary that we continue this burn ban and that you approve it today.
>> questions? Move that we approve another order prohibiting outdoor burning in unincorporated areas of Travis County.
>> second.
>> discussion of the motion? All in favor? That passes by unanimous vote. With Commissioner Davis joining the court. And just as a reminder, last week we did prohibit the sale or use of those two flying --
>> restricted fireworks.
>> fireworks. And the industry has decided this year to sell only five days instead of the 10 days that the law allows.
>> that's correct.
>> so let's repeat our appreciation for their doing that. That helps a whole lot. Thank you.
