Travis County Commissioners Court
June 3, 2008
Item 18
18 is to consider and take appropriate action argued the use of $250,000 in line item savings from transportation and natural resources road and bridge to fund a pavement condition survey to evaluate the condition and future needs of Travis County's roadways.
>> since 1987 we have been doing pavement condition surveys about every four years. We have built now a pretty good trend line that we can use to find out how well our roads are -- in what condition they're in. And the court as a result has been able to use this as a tool for programming maintenance on a year to year basis. It makes very good use of our resources so we know exactly what type of maintenance to do on particular classes of roadway. And it's an efficient way for us to allocate our road and bridge resources for maintenance. So -- and we do have as a goal the court set to maintain 75% of our roads in good to fair condition. So what we're asking the court to do is appropriate some $250,000 to do again an update of our pavement management system. We'd like to do it this summer, so it is available to program our work in fy '09. And that's a request we do have savings, one time savings that we can apply to this effort.
>> so those one time savings are the same as we just talked about in the other item?
>> no, they are different. They are different.
>> [ laughter ]
>> we realize the sensitivity of it and we wanted to make sure we had both items on. But no, they are different.
>> I’d like to move approval of that, judge.
>> [ laughter ]
>> discussion?
>> just one thing. The same analysis, though, of looking at our whole paving system and the condition of our roads will be similar or will there be any variation in the way they analyze?
>> it depends on who bids on the proposal. This will be contracted out, but typically the methodology will remain the same.
>> okay.
>> so you will have comparability to previous years.
>> I have no problem with it then.
>> any more discussion? All in favor? That passes by unanimous vote. Commissioner Daugherty had to run to another commitment.
