Travis County Commissioners Court
March 4, 2008
Item 1
And number 1 is to consider and take appropriate action on an order prohibiting outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Travis County. We've had an order in place for the last five or six weeks. The outstanding order expires.
>> tomorrow.
>> good mortgage, pete baldwin, Travis County emergency management coordinator. Unfortunately the little bit of rain that we've got was not near enough, some areas got less than a 10th of an inch. The most that we could find on the hydromet systems were .6, down at 183 and onion creek. We have had not had sustaining rains, then winds yesterday, whatever moisture we got dried everything out. Basically the recommendation is that we sign a new order and review weekly, hopefully we will get some spring rains.
>> okay. Can we explain to the residents how they can -- how they can -- burn and comply with the ban?
>> if they are burning in a container that is designed to contain all sparks and flames, that is completely legal. If it is a prescribed burn, meaning there is a certified burn manager with a plan and they register that with the local fire departments to let us know, there are several other limitations in there. One is for pipelines flaring natural gas. We have a request in to do that next week. That is exempted under the order. So there are certain orders -- certain ways people can burn. But primarily it's you can't light off those brush piles and you can't have open containers burning trash with flames and ashes coming out of them.
>> okay. With that I move approval of the recommendation to -- to basically approve another order banning outdoor burning.
>> yes, sir.
>> discussion? Of the motion? All in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
>> thank you.
