Travis County Commissioners Court
October 9, 2007
Item 5
5. Approve proclamation recognizing October 7 through October 13, 2007 as "fire prevention week" in Travis County. (judge Biscoe) should I read it.
>> it reads whereas the week of October 7th through October 13th, 2007 is national fire prevention week, whereas Travis County is committed to ensuring the safety and security of its residents. Whereas fire is a serious public safety concern, both locally and nationally. And homes are the places where people are at greatest risk from fires; whereas home fires killed over 3,000 people in the united states in 2005, roughly eight people each -- every day. Eight people every day. Whereas firefighters are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through preventive and public -- and protection education. Whereas Travis County residents are responsible to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire. Whereas residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire. Whereas the 2007 fire prevention week theme is fire prevention week, practice your escape plan, effectively serves to remind us all of the simple actions we take to stay -- simple actions we can take to stay safer from fire during fire prevention week and year round, and whereas residential desiring more information about exit drills in the home may contact the Travis County fire marshal's office at 854-4621. Now therefore be it resolved that we the Travis County Commissioners court do hereby proclaim October 7th through October 13th, 2007, as fire prevention week in Travis County and encourage all residents of Travis County to have an escape strategy and practices your escape plan and I move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning.
>> good morning.
>> judge, economics, good morning. Travis County fire marshal's office. Thank you so much for the proclamation, judge. If the citizens wish to contact the Travis County fire marshal's office we can -- we can put them in contact with the local fire department office. We also have resources to share with the citizenry so that we -- so that they might have better opportunities for escaping a fire in their home, heaven forbid if it were to happen. We also will be partnering with our esd partners, again this year as we did last year, going out into the nightclubs, out in the public venues, making sure that those are in the commercial aspect or are the place that we see most fires and fire fatalities. We will be out doing that again this month. Partnering with the esd partners, we wish to thank you judge and Commissioners for making this proclamation.
>> so no matter how large or small your home is, you need an escape strategy. I guess you need to run through it a few times to make sure that everybody in the family understands it.
>> yes, sir, judge. Make it fun with the kids, have a place to meet outside. Make sure that it's a fixed object that doesn't move. Once you get outside stay outside. And -- and you will -- the outcome will be much better.
>> sounds real simple.
>> it is, sir.
>> but my guess is not enough of us do it.
>> we don't. We become lacksidasical and we don't practices, quite frankly, and we need to do better with that.
>> eight deaths a day in the nation, huh?
>> that is correct, judge.
>> it's a big nation, but that's a big number, isn't it? Especially since we can avoid it.
>> certainly is.
>> any more discussion? All in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
>> thank you.
>> we have a motion and a second, right? Okay.
>>
>> [indiscernible]
>> okay. All right. Once we approve one of these, you have to take it with you. Once you walk through that door it's yours.
>> thank you. Thank you all. You are doing a great job.
