Travis County Commissioners Court
September 25, 2007
Item 4
Number 4 is consider and take appropriate action on request to adopt order setting the Travis County tax rate for the year beginning January 1, 2007 2007.
>> you have before you a draft order which -- originals of which are in the judge's office. The law requires you to make separate motions on m and o, maintenance and operation tax rate, and a separate motion on the debt service tax rate, and then a third motion on the combined tax rate. M&o is 34.5 sentsdz and debt service 8.11 cents, and the total of those has been discussed in various forum, is a tax rate of 42.16 cents. The law also requires the order to indicate the change in the m&o rate as it's applied to a constant $100,000 house. So that when the tax rate goes down, you would have a decrease in the m&o taxes applied to a $100,000 tax, and when the m&o rate goes up, you would have an increase. This law is part of public disclosure, and in your order it does show that the tax rate will decrease taxes for maintenance and operations on a $100,000 home by approximately $21.80. And that is -- that ignores a rising value of a home. It ignores the average price of a homestead in Travis County. And it ignores the debt service rate, but it does meet the statute.
>> so the recommendation and what we have been discussing recently has been m&o rate of .3405 and debt service rate of .0811 which total .4216.
>> that's correct.
>> I move approval of that rate.
>> second.
>> discussion? All in favor? Show Commissioners Gomez, Davis, eckhardt and yours truly voting in favor. Voting against, Commissioner Daugherty.
