Travis County Commissioners Court
August 14, 2007
Item 2
Number 2 is presented check to big brothers, big sisters of central Texas and Austin's chirngs shelter from the second annual Travis County sheriff's shootout.
>> good morning, judges, Commissioners. I'm greg hamilton, Travis County sheriff, and it gives me honor to do this presentation today. Last year we had our first Travis County sheriff shootout. A lot of people thought it was going to be gun slinging but it was basketball. And we held it at the Austin independent school district's gym and, quite frankly, some of those individuals that are coaches right now either played football with me or coached. And we were able to get those gyms for free. We only had about 17 teams last year. We didn't have a lot of time to plan this. We partnered up with big brothers, big sisters, also a couple of organizations, youth organizations, the Austin toros and many other organizations to put this on. We're excited about it because this year we doubled the amount of teams. We even had teams that came in from california, and we have received calls from teams out of florida. The Travis County sheriff's office shootout is going to be the tournament that everybody wants to attend. We're expecting to triple it next year and have to get more teams. We are also excited about the -- this is not only something that's being done by the sheriff's office, we're reaching out to the community and we received a bunch of in-kind donations in order to make this happen. This year we were able to raise a total of $12,000 on this basketball tournament, and we received about $8,700 in in-kind donations. We were able to profit $7,000, and this year we are continuing to team up with big brothers and big sisters and Austin's children's shelter. Last year we did big brothers and big sisters, we did the east Austin kick ball association, and we also did troop 1500 is who we gave our contributions to. This year we're giving them to Austin's children's shelter and also big brothers and big sisters. The man sitting to my right is the one that spearheaded it a good job.eputy orton, and he almost had a nervous breakdown because of some of the confusion going on over there, but we were able to pull it through. We have with us today representatives from big brothers and big sisters along with Austin's children's shelter who we have adopted from the sheriff's office. We're big sisters the executive director kenneth taylor, I would like him to step forward, and megan johns who is our bookkeeper who keeps us in line. From the Austin children's shelter gina van deputy galloway and deputy kitchens who also played a part in this. And it couldn't be done without the leadership in that unit which we have director kelly page and captain mark sauer behind me. We would like to present this check here in the Commissioners court if the individuals would step up here, we would appreciate it. And we would love --
