Item 22

Number 22 is to consider and take appropriate action on request to purchase ford expeditions as a full size sport utility vehicle for medical examiner and fire marshal departments.

>> tnr, this is really a business and a policy issue. Several years back, we had proposed to buy some forward expe ford expeditions and the court asked us to cease doing that because of the image portrayed to the public. For this number of years we have not purchased ford expeditions but the differential now is so great that we thought we would bring it back to the court for reconsideration and perhaps the image is no longer what it was in those times. The medical examiner's office and the fire marshal marshal's office requested and received court approval, funding for suv's, and when tnr went out to price the vehicles, which would be a chevy suburban and tahoe, we found a substantial difference in price, 8-9,000 per vehicle, that the county could save if we purchased expe digs instead. We are talking about almost $1,000 savings by purchasing ford expeditions for these two departments, who say that the ford expeditions meets their business needs just as well as the suburban and tahoe. And we seek court approval to go ahead and purchase the ec pe additions--the exexpe disks.

>> these will make the needs of the department, the particular needs.

>> that is correct.

>> okay. Move approval.

>> second.

>> and then the cost as well it falls within the--

>> it actually savings 18 18,000.

>> and between the tahoe and suburban, did we investigate any other makes that would be appropriate to our needs?

>> besides those two.

>> because of the requirements of the department for hauling, we certainly needed a minimum size vehicle and also the fact that they wanted four- four-wheel vehicles because they are off-road in a number of case. So those were kind of the driving factors in how we spec the vehicle. Then the ford expedition of course is on the state contract and that's why the prices are so low . These are the only two that met the criteria for cabin space and four-wheel drive sm.

>> yes, ma'am.

>> our taxpayers, this action allows Travis County to save a substantial amount of money.

>> it does.

>> all in favor. That passes by unanimous vote.
