4. Approve proclamation declaring the month of April 2007 as “national child abuse awareness month”.

>> ...it continues to be a collaborative effort of the Travis County sheriff's office, and local service organizations that are united by the mission of protecting children. Whereas surveys have shown that although a majority of americans believes that -- that everyone should play a role in stopping child abuse, many people have met to witness -- have witnessed child abuse and did nothing about it. The reasons for not reporting abuse include not knowing where to call and incorrect assumptions regarding what happens once a report is made to police or a child protective services agency. Whereas last year child protective services confirmed that 2,435 Travis County children were victims of abuse or neglect, whereas child abuse like any type of violence does not discriminate, it occurs within every ethnic, religious, and socio-economic growth. Our entire community must increase its awareness of present day problems and the resulting impact on children. Whereas child abuse awareness month is a perfect opportunity for the...

>> good morning. I'm greg hamilton, Travis County sheriff and the young man that I have next to me is deputy taylor. Two years ago, well, this will be the second year that we are involved in the light of hope. It's an awareness campaign where it's held over at the carver museum or carver library, both of those are real close by each other. And we begin to play a major role in this particular campaign. I would like for deputy taylor who is our lead, point guy, that's addressing this issue that have been part of the planning committee for the last two years, I can tell you that it's not the size of the extravaganza that we had on Saturday, but it's pretty close to it.

>> one of the things that we do with the light of hope, we get together with -- I'm on the board, we have partnered with c.p.s., any baby can, baca, other sponsors, we bring certain things to light of hope. Part of what the sheriff's office is doing is providing sponsorships for different things through my sponsors our our sponsors, whether it be food, different vendors, prizes and getting the word out there about -- about the light of hope in this event on April 3rd at the carver library. Excuse me. And one of the things that we are -- we try to do is we try to be vigilant out there with the department of family and protective services and their needs and anything that they want us to do or want to have at the event, we have provided that through the Travis County Commissioners court 5:30 to 7:30 on April 3rd.
