Travis County Commissioners Court
May 31, 2005
Item 12
One item that I thought would be real fast, but I wasn't sure whether there were issues, whether somebody would be here on number 12. 12. Consider and take appropriate action on contract with the Texas heat wave for custom car and truck show at the expo center July 22 through 24, 2005. Any issues with that?
>> I don't have any.
>> well, i've got a comment, I don't know that I necessarily have an issue with the discount. Judge, I would -- I would really like to see us have a county survey in place so we can find out exactly what's going on with concessions. I continue to hear an unusual amount of concerns about the concessions at the expo center. With everything from price to personnel to quality, it is -- there is something central in in the theme of what I continue to hear from folks. We have discussed that at various times. I did make an unannounced site visit. It's been a year that I did it, but I was concerned about that at the time. I have spoken with at least one of the principals with our vendor, have let it be known that I really would like to get a lot less comments about concessions at the expo center. I know that we have a contract. I知 fine living with the contract, I知 not so sure that we don't need to push somebody on doing a better job with the concessions. I think what we really need is -- is either working with colby, working with facilities management or whatever, but let's set something up so that we can really survey, I mean a good survey of a number of the patrons that are going to be there that particular weekend because this is a -- this is obviously a -- a very good weekend for Travis County, obviously a very good weekend for the concessionnaire, but I would like something to go back, be constructive, this is what we are hearing, can we do something about it.
>> do we need a separate posting to consider that?
>> I知 more than happy to -- to come up with something, put it on the agenda and see if we can get -- get colby facilities management or whatever, colby is here, I mean, would that make sense to you, colby, to -- put something together like that. Whoever wants to be involved in coming one the survey, we can be pretty specific about, you know, what we are looking for. But I知 sure that we have done enough of these things before. But let's get something out of it, I mean, let's not just have it so mundane if you read it, okay, we've asked those questions, but you know if we gave those responses to the concessionnaire. I want this to be constructive. Because I think if they can do as good of a job as we would like them to do, so be it. But I知 surprised that they are unaware of it, but if we work with you on that --
>> no, we've done some of this before. I can go back and pull out some old ones, we can also do a new one this weekend, too.
>> I知 happy to work with whoever from the court.
>> a really good validation in terms of another good venue that has very modest priced tickets. Dell diamond, 12,000 people run through who are quite hungry when they come to the ballpark, that might be a good reality check on prices to start.
>> okay.
>> if they are the barometer, I will tell you, they have been running a good operation, but they are not inexpensive. I don't know a lot of concessionnaires, a lot of places like movies, they are expensive.
>> we are in the same ballpark as far as prices go. Event facilities that we have checked with.
>> quality.
>> sorry.
>> that's what I want --
>> anything else on 12?
>> I知 fine with the contract.
>> move approval.
>> discussion? All in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
