Travis County Commissioners Court
February 22, 2005
Item 5
Number 5 is to approve resolution recognizing lawrence vaults on his retirement from the Travis County counseling and education services department after fifteen years of service.
>> should I read the resolution.
>> yes, we are here to ask the court's approval for the resolution of mr. Vaults.
>> he began his work with Travis County at cscd as an adult probation officer, transferring to criminal justice planning in 1995, to help develop trans sixal programs -- transitional promises for people assigned to Travis County juvenile justice center, then community resource coordinator, only to return to the Travis County department of counseling and education services in 1999. Whereas lawrence vaults is recognized in the Travis County community and beyond as an advocate who is dedicated towards improving the quality of life of those less fortunate. He has demonstrated a tenacious and unselfish commitment to being a part of the solution, developing and maintaining safe communities and fostering the ideals of dignity, respect and justice for all, regardless, whereas lawrence is also known to continuously work to the sounds of the oldies radio stations and the radios always at too high of a volume [laughter] both early sign that's retirement may indeed be a really good idea. [laughter] that does not come from the county judge, mr. Vaults, it's in the proclamation. We have all greatly benefited from his wisdom, experience, hard work, indebted to him for his outstanding service and wish to express our appreciation and gratitude, it is appropriate for us to honor him for dedicating his career to serving his fellow man, therefore be it resolved that we the members of the Travis County Commissioners court do hereby extend special thanks to lawrence vaults for his years of dedicated service to Travis County and extend the best wishes to him and all future endeavors, I move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning.
>> thank you.
>> I would also like to announce that we are going to have a reception for lawrence at counseling and education services intake office. That's 1101 nueces, right down the street, the corner of 11th and nueces this Friday from 3:00 to 5:00.
>> thank you very much. In addition to 15 years of outstanding service to Travis County, mr. Vawlts was also at the state of Texas for eight years, the state probation department, community center with wackenhut, that's 25 years. And you appear to be such a young man, mr. Vaults. [laughter]
>> I’m [indiscernible] davila, assistant director of education services, I would like to say i've had the pleasure of working for about seven years now. I've learned a lot from him, but he is -- he is a great sounding board, a great person to -- to inspire people under him. He's represented the county throughout the nation. He is our point person's in the america corrections association and the association of southern conferences. He would attend those conferences, but also was a leader in -- in both organizations. Serving in all different capacities in different task force committees and boards. We are certainly going to miss him, but hopefully as you mentioned, judge, you may be recruited to volunteer for the county. So I’m glad that he's retiring. It's a job well done and I’m looking forward to working with him in the future.
>> I just want to say thank you to the court for recognizing me and honoring me. It's a humbling experience, I have enjoyed my tenure here with the county of travis as well as walker county. Also the -- the opportunity to work at the state jail and I do also applaud my supervisors and thank you for having me. My co-workers for being there for me. And most of all, thank god for the opportunity.
>> I wanted to say that we really appreciate your service, but not only that, I know that you are going to stay busy doing something. You are not going to just retire and sit down, I know better than that.
>> i'll be available [laughter]
>> so anyway take care of and thank you.
>> thank you.
>> thank you for your service.
>> thank you.
>> all in favor? That passes by unanimous vote. We don't have the key to the bank or a $50 certificate to wal-mart, but we have a beautiful operation for you that's yours.
>> thank you, judge.
>> thank you again. [ applause ]
>> good to see you again.
>> thank you.
>> you're welcome.
