Travis County Commissioners Court
December 21, 2004
Item 3
Item number 3, approve proclamation recognizing the Travis County wellness
subcommittee for coordination of the brown santa first annual 5k race. And
should I read the proclamation? It reads: whereas service, dedication and
leadership should always be recognized, whereas Travis County wellness committee
through the 5k race subcommittee sponsored the first annual 5 k and kids k
races in support of Travis County's sheriff's office brown santa office. Whereas
the 5 k subcommittee has demonstrated its commitment to this in a fashion
that made this an enormous success, and whereas these efforts have helped
successfully elevate Travis County wellness programs to new levels of community
awareness and involvement. Therefore now be it resolved that the Travis County
Commissioners court of the state of Texas greatly recognizes the contributions
of the 5k race subcommittee to brown santa and Travis County and wish them
continued success in the annual race and wellness fair events.
>> move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning.
>> good morning, thank you, judge, Commissioners. We're pleased
to be here today, the first day of winter, which is an appropriate time to
recognize santa, in this case brown santa. And the 5k race committee members
who are standing and sitting around here. They worked very hard to bring this
event to from you ition, and as -- fruition, and as a successful event it
was. We had over 1500 people attend the race. We understand that it included
governor perry, which we're pleased about that. And included our Commissioners
who ran, Commissioners who walked very fast -- [ laughter ] and it was a tremendous
event. And especially since it raised funds for brown santa. And we're here
today to present tracy, the chair of brown santa, with a check -- somewhere
we have a check -- for just over $6,000.
>> all right. [ applause ]
>> it was not only a fun event, it was a fund-raising event
that proved very successfully. And I would like to turn it over to bonnie
floyd who was the chair of the 5k, kids k race and talk about the attendance
and how the funds were raised and what we're going to do next year.
>> thank you very much. This $6,000, little over $6,000,
represents the largest donation to brown santa this year. So we're very proud
of that and we've got our sights set next year on even bigger and better things.
We had a total of almost 250 people for the brown santa 5 k and kids k, including
a couple of Commissioners, and i've been sworn to secrecy regarding your times.
[ laughter ] you finished before me, i'll say that. [ laughter ] we had a
wonderful time. It was a lot of hard work, but we did have a great time. We
can't wait to do it again next year. We've already got plans for next year,
how we will make it an even bigger and better event. So we would like to present
this to tracy for brown santa on behalf of the 5 k committee and we hope to
have more money to give you next year. And we'd like to have a picture made
with the Commissioners if we can. Thank you very much.
>> we also would like to thank our sponsors. I don't want
to take time to read all of them, but we had some terrific sponsors and I
think they're committed to continuing sponsorship of this event. We had some
partnerships and one of whom was with the Austin runners club, which we partnered
with on our first event to learn a lot. It was such a good effort that we're
going to continue partnering with them.
>> now, to answer Commissioner Daugherty's concern, the scarcity
of men on the committee simply means they would rather walk and run than be
involved in committee meetings. [ laughter ]
>> we did have some men on the committee, they just don't
happen to be here this morning.
>> we actually had some runners on the committee.
>> we even had a marathon runner on the committee.
>> that's right.
>> I’m sure he's out running this morning. [ laughter ]
>> well, I’m sure it's better with that explanation. All
in favor? That passes by unanimous vote. Come down front for the picture taking.
>> thank you. [ applause ]
>> and Commissioners Daugherty and Sonleitner, you get to
stand in the middle where the judge normally stands since you participated
in the walk/run.
>> I was walk.
