Travis County Commissioners Court
November 9, 2004
Item 5
Number 5 is to approve resolution recognizing November 11th, 2004, as veterans
day and celebrate the recognition of Austin/ Travis County as a veterans day
national committee 2004 regional site. It reads: whereas the citizens of Travis
County have throughout the history of our great nation been in the forefront
of those who have made sacrifices for the freedoms we all enjoy. Whereas those
residents who have served in the united states armed services have brought
honor and distinction to Travis County through their service. Whereas they
take this special opportunity to honor our veterans, our vietnam era veterans
and their families for their sacrifices from the said armed forces to southeast
asia for over 9,087,000 military personnel, of which 7,984 were women, served
on active duty between February 28th, 1961 and may 7, 1975. Whereas the Travis
County veterans service office and the Austin/Travis County veterans day parade
committee chairman have chosen the theme of the parade and other events to
commemorate the 40th anniversary of the gulf of tonkan resolution on which
on August 7, 1964, congress gave president scpron son the power to resolve
the conflict by any means necessary. Whereas many of our residents who made
the ultimate sacrifice during the vietnam conflict and other wars, during
the vietnam war there were over 53,000 casualties, over 2,300 u.s. Personnel
missing in action, and over 700 prisoners of war. The actions of these brave
individuals upheld our democratic principles and helped to preserve our way
of life. And whereas it is appropriate that the proclamation and unsell --
pay try on theic and unselfish veterans be celebrated. Now therefore be it
resolved by the Travis County Commissioners court that all citizens and residents
of Travis County are urged to observe November 11th, 2004, as veterans day
with appropriate programs and activities focusing on the achievements of those
who have served this great nation and show an appreciation for their service.
And I move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning, judge and Commissioners. The proclamation
says it all. I thought maybe I was going to add a little bit more to it, but
in the act of reading it, after hearing you read it again, it says it all.
There's a couple of things that I am proud of this year as far as accomplishments.
One is that being recognized as a national regional site for this 51st anniversary
-- annual anniversary of the douglas day celebration, in this recognition
was given to us by the secretary of the veterans affairs. This is a very prestigious
recognition, and we hope to do you proud on November the 11th. The second
thing is that our parade has doubled in size. We would normally have about
40 to 50 entries into the parade. This time we're looking at 80 plus. That's
remarkable. I am also proud of that afid is still recognizing world war ii
veterans last night at their board meeting they awarded the diploma to three
individuals who came up their time while they were in high school to go defend
this country. Last week I am proud that channel 17 will film the whole ceremony,
the parade and the program at the steps. Again, the parade will start at 9:00,
up congress avenue. We have the viewing stand at the stephen f. Austin hotel
balcony. You are all welcome to participate and view the parade from that
vantage point. And the ceremony will start at 11:00 o'clock.
>> at the capitol?
>> at the capitol steps.
>> can you give us the highlights of that certificate that
you have there?
>> this certificate is basically accorded to individuals
who make applications for their -- for their city or -- for their city to
be recognized as a national regional site. That authorizes additional support
from the states to participate and help program -- help support the program
for veterans day.
>> can we bring up item 6 and also approve both of them?
>> yes, sir.
