Travis County Commissioners Court
October 19, 2004
Item 3
Number 3 is to approve proclamation recognizing lights on after school. The
proclamation reads: whereas every child has a right to grow within a safe
environment, receive care and protection and develop a positive self-image.
Whereas part of the after-school program helps boost social development and
assures families their children are cared for after the school day ends. National
lights on after school is -- [indiscernible] critical link they provide in
helping our children become successful adults. Whereas the Travis County after-school
network is a collaboration of public and private organizations and agencies
that work to expand the capacity, provide technical assistance, and the best
practices for after-school programs in Austin-Travis County. Whereas when
we help our children, we provide for their future and our future as well.
And whereas all children are encouraged to engage in innovative after-school
programs that children have a place to go where the lights are on for them.
And where they can be productive and protected after school. Now therefore
be it resolved that we the members of the Travis County Commissioners court
do hereby proclaim -- do herb urge, rather, all residents of Travis County
to join us in extending special thanks to the dedicated individuals and organizations
who make lights on after school possible, and I move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning. Deborah brit ton, health and human services
department. Thank you very much for honoring us with this proclamation to
basically advise the community about lights on after school. With me this
morning is shirley justice, with the Austin independent school district. And
she can probably give you a little bit of information about some of the activities
that have occurred around lights on after school.
>> good morning.
>> good morning. I just want to thank you all very much for
supporting the children of Travis County in this way by providing funding
for after-school programs. It's going very well. We have registered right
now over 300 students in the 78752 and 78723 zip codes to participate in after
school. We expect to have many more participating by the end of the year.
They are participating in a variety of activities. Students are getting tutored,
they are involved in theater projects, they are involved in art projects.
They are playing pool, they are playing basketball. Just about anything you
can think of. They are taking drumming classes. And what's really neat about
it is that you can go over to webb or pierce and see children who would not
ordinarily be involved in healthy, safe and productive activities, they are
now involved in those types of activities thanks to you and your generosity.
And I think that you will be very happy and I invite to you visit webb or
pierce any afternoon to see what those kids are doing. I think you will be
very excited. Thank you.
>> thank you.
>> we were planning to come forward with a briefing on the
initial contract period which started August 17th and ended in September.
And what shirleen just referred to are the efforts to recruiting kids. We
only had a goal of 85 and they were able to recruit 417 kids, which is news
phenominal. But we are still planning to come forward because I think it would
be very helpful for the court to understand all of the work that has gone
in at this point in time to launch our after-school program. So thank you
very much.
>> so 417 wand to participate or 417 are participating?
>> 417 have been enrolled and are participating.
>> okay. I wanted that point clarified. [laughter]
>> thank you very much.
>> thank you.
>> all in favor? That passes by unanimous vote. And you all
just carry this beautiful proclamation with you.
>> oh, thank you. [indiscernible].
>> thank you very much.
>> thank you.
