Number 1 is a public hearing to receive comments on elected officials' salaries for f.y. '05.
>> move open the public hearing.
>> second.
>> all in favor? That passes by unanimous vote. What we did for elected officials was supply the 5.75 that we voted to give rank and file to elected officials with a few exceptions. We increased the paste justicees of the peace. We increased the county clerk's salary by more than that to match her salary to the tax assessor-collector's salary and for the district and county court at law judges. Increased theirs more than 5.75 consistent with the decision we made last year. The judges' salaries come from a dedicated fund which is well funded now. If that fund ever runs out or if the legislature changes the law on that dedication, then the Travis County general fund would have to pick up that responsibility. Otherwise for the other elected officials we applied to 5.75 across the board. Any additional comments, mr. Smith?
>> no, only to say that the district judges' salaries are coming out of the general fund. I didn't want that -- resources for the -- that were used are not in a special fund, they go into the general fund.
>> but there's a judicial fee.
>> yes. That's correct. It's an additional amount that goes into the general fund as opposed to a special, separate, independent fund. So your statement that some day if that dries up the general fund will have to pick it up, the general fund is already picking it up. Resources go into the general fund which is the large caldron.
>> that judicial fund is sufficient to cover the salaries now.
>> yes.
>> but that's based on the number of cases filed and also the legislative wisdom.
>> that's correct.
>> so they could easily do away with the law or keep us stomach piling cases.
>> that's correct.
>> I stand corrected. Would anyone like to give testimony during this public hearing? If so, please come forward.
>> move the public hearing be closed.
>> second.
>> all in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
